Select an important ore mined in your state or region, and discuss how geologic events played a role in forming this ore. Discuss the importance of this ore in the economy of your selected area and the U.S. as a whole.
I live in Virginia, but it says that nothing has been mined here since the 50’s. What could I use for this question?
Make sure there aren’t any active mines, even small ones. If there’s really nothing, use the most important historical ore found in Virginia.

You are correct, your own Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy lists nothing as a mineral resource. (Link #1 below.)
However, under "Industrial Materials," the following are minerals, so they may count:
Feldspar, Gypsum, Kyanite, Vermiculite.
The Industrial and Heavy Mineral Sands, and Iron Oxide Pigments are not pure minerals, so they don’t count.
Just click on each link of those minerals, because they have provided links for you specific to your region.
To understand the geology of your state, there is a very good resource at the #2 link.
