Magic in the ancient world?
Many of us have heard a little about Celtic teachings, and its base in modern day Wicca. Thats a good starting point, but I’d like to learn more about the various ways people related to the supernatural throughout history independent of organized religion. What were some of the magic practices (witchcraft, shamanism, herb-lore it could have been many different things to different people) in the ancient world, say the bronze age. What do we know about Egypt, Greece or Babylon and their spells for instance?

P.S sorry if this is worded a little awkwardly!

The study of magic in the Greco-Roman world is a branch of the disciplines of classics, ancient history and religious studies. In the ancient psycholinguistic world of the Greeks and Romans (the Greco-Roman world), the public and private rituals associated with religion are accepted by historians and archaeologists to have been a part of everyday life. Examples of this phenomenon are found in the various state and cult Temples, Jewish Synagogues and in the early Christian cathedrals and churches. These were important hubs for the ancient peoples of the Greco-Roman world that were representative of a connection between the heavenly realms (the divine) and the earthly planes (the dwelling place of humanity). This context of magic has become an academic study especially in the last twenty years.[1] Magic is generally seen as "any attempt to control the environment or the self by means that are either untested or untestable, such as charms or spells. There are plenty of books for sell, that have a better perspective of things.

In Ancient Egypt (Kemet) Heka was the divine manifestation of Magick.

"Heka literally means activating the Ka, the aspect of the soul which embodied personality. Egyptians thought activating the power of the soul was how magic worked. "Heka" also implied great power and influence, particularly in the case of drawing upon the Ka of the gods. Heka acted together with Hu, the principle of divine utterance, and Sia, the concept of divine omniscience, to create the basis of creative power both in the mortal world and the world of the gods." Wikipedia

"Egyptians believed that with the help of heka, they could influence the world of the gods and gain protection, healing and support." (Wikipedia)

The only concept of evil/illegal magic was magic used against the Pharaoh
? Kirra Blackhart ? | Jan 06, 2010

The Graeco-Roman world was most known for its curses inscribed on tablets (called "katadesmoi").
Also, the Greek Magical Papyri are a very important magical text of the ancient world.

Greece was always big into all sorts of Magic. Divination (oracles anyone?), curses, love, bindings. Name it and they did it!

Egypt was also very into Magic. There are countless texts and frescos depicting magical methods. The most well known book is the Book of the Dead (or as it is actually called "The Book of Coming Forth by Day") which has all kinds of magical methods they used mainly for the aid of the dead (since the afterlife was of great importance to them).
Also, Egyptian Magic was bound to the clergy meaning all other "users" were outlawed so that neither the clergy’s power would be opposed nor the Pharaoh’s life threatened.

how come?

Actually, he played Rudy Giuliani shortly after 9/11 when his popularity was still pretty high. The movie, entitled "Rudy" if I recall, did not portray Giuliani as a saint but on balance it gave a flattering portrayal.

Cos he does a damn fine job at it. When anyone talks about Hecules they always mention Hades and he was absolutely briliant havent seen schoolds out, Final Fantasy eh the film was ok he still stood out though. Oh and in The Specialist he was good also

Quite simple: Because counter to everything you are taught in Bible School….and High School and on your Mommy’s knee, people ARE judged by the way they look.
Certainly they are judged by First Appearances, anyway.
James Woods looks like a sleaze ball…….therefore: villain.
Denzel Washington’s a big, handsome, cool dude……..therefore: hero. Least wise until "Training Day," when some white honky filed a law suit, claiming reverse discrimination.

He was stereotyped early in his career. Many actors turn down roles, or quit them so they won’t be ‘typed.’ That’s why Sean Connery quit the James Bond films. He wanted to be more than Bond.

at the eleventh hour?

That means something like "At the last minute". "Time was running out: it happened just in time."
There are only 12 hours on the old analogue clocks (not 24) and once the 11 is reached, there’s only 59 minutes left before midnight.

What does the song "Mad World" mean?
I’m just curious… Here are the lyrics. What does it mean to you? Thanks (:

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying
Are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It’s a very, very
Mad World
Mad world
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what’s my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying
Are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It’s a very, very
Mad World
Mad World
Enlarging your world
Mad World.

It’s a view of the world from a sad perspective.
ScarecrowPolitics | Jan 12, 2010

i think he’s saying that everything around us is crazy and sad… we just need to change our perspective. Everything is changing, but staying the same. XxX
Amy | Jan 12, 2010

sounds like this guy is seriously depressed. In the song, he expresses how people have hurt him, and it’s apparently too much. Thus, Mad World. Though the video is pretty awesome!

There was a similar question asked 3 years ago and were answered by a member named G.O.A.T in which it was chosen to be the best answer. I hope it will help.

Best Answer – Chosen by Asker
Basically it’s a song about how life is just one big boring thing, example, have you ever had a dream that you enjoyed so much that when you woke up for the rest of your day all you can think about was your dream and how much you just wish you were back in that place? for me it’s when i’m around people who are happy, maybe for the guy who sung the song was of him dying, everyone has their own place of happiness, i once had a dream of me dying and it lead me to another "dream" and i was warm, comfortable, happy, the next night all i can think about was "am i gonna dream the same thing as last night?"

Mel Kano
A guy has an "online girlfriend", his ‘e-mail kanojo’. They decide to meet and wind up working for a company that hosts the web site where the first met. Their job is to track down people using the web site to try to sell drugs or seduce minors or other illegal things.

Until Death Do Us Part.
Not the main character, but his partner who is in almost every chapter. He drives the van with all the computer equipment in it. He helps the swordsman with night vision, electromagnetic pulses to knock out enemy surveillance and other goodies. They are fighting (among others) a computer firm that wants to take the brain of a girl to make computers that can predict the future.

Also, I don’t know if this is to your taste, but one of the major themes of Gantz is that the people behind it all have the most incredible technology, including artificial immortality, teleportation, perfect duplication of items, objects and even people, and instant healing or regeneration, even from severed limbs. The main characters are in too much trouble to even think through the ramifications of such technology becoming available on present-day Earth, but as the reader I find it fascinating to speculate on and this is part of the appeal of the series to me.

The first two are on onemanga.com, Gantz is on mangahut

Computer virus on other computer; can't access the Internet?
I just got a virus on my other computer and I can’t get online (it won’t even open to my yahoo home page). Internet explorer shows a "page cannot be displayed" while Firefox refuses to open at all.

When I try to open other things on my computer, from YIM to Microsoft Word or anything else, it will say that the file is infected and cannot be opened.

I do not a virus blocker but I ran an anti-spy not long before the virus hit.

Not sure what caused the virus. But I began getting notifications that my computer was infected and I got an offer to clean the computer (but I did not know the "activation code" and I couldn’t "buy the full product" because I could not get into Firefox or online)

I don’t think I can do anything without Internet access right now…

A little help?
I need the answer to be broken down into language I understand; I don’t know how to fix a computer at all.

well the thing that told you you had viruses gave you the virus most of those things that do that are rouge/fake virus software just do a system restore till the day before you got the virus and it should fix it if not you need to download malwarebytes and do a system scan then remove it that way but since you cant acsess the internet you’ll have to download an anti-virus and save the setup.exe or whatever to a USB device then plug it into the infected computer then scan and everything and it should work
Travis | Jan 02, 2010

you may as well reload back to the factory setting, use the option ‘destory all files’,yes you will lose everything, but your system will be clean, then install the norton 360 and your problems should be over/////////

You’ve already "bought" as much as they had to sell. You do have malware. Your best bet is to try fighting it in Safe Mode With Networking. That sometimes keeps malware from protecting itself and keeping you from the Internet.

There are never any guarantees in malware fighting, but try this:

If you have an anti-virus, make sure it has the latest virus definitions and run a full scan with it in Safe Mode with Networking. If you don
