Doctor Zhivago vs Anna Karenina?
Which is best in your own opinion and why?

If your question is about two masterpieces of the world literature, it is a matter of personal preferences. I prefer to read Leo Tolstoy the author of "Anna Karenina", because he is a great master of Russian language. I am fluent in Russian, so I am able to truly appreciate the beauty of self expression Leo Tolstoy is famous for. Boris Pasternak’s novel "Doctor Zhivago" was not an easy read. His genius is not in his linguistic abilities, but in clear understanding and love for tortured history of his country. I appreciate his passion and intricate story line, but feel no particular love for his characters.

Now, if your question is about two characters, I don’t have a favorite here. Both of them rebelled against convention in their own way, and paid in full for all the brief happiness it brought them. Both Anna Karenina and Doctor Zhivago were very well written characters, which is why they appear to be very much alive even nowadays. I can’t help but admire their courage in a face of adversity. BTW, Anna Karenina risked her relationship with her beloved son and her own well being (social position) to follow her heart. That took a lot of courage in a time, when females of her stature took a lover and carried on an uncomplicated social life without a need for any sacrifices. She gambled with her happiness and lost. It is a sad story of a lady who placed her heart into unworthy hands. And by the time she realized her mistake, it was too late to correct it. Sadly, she was not a survivor, but Yuri Zhivago was.

Both are awesome Masterpiece of Human Literature. But sadly, it would be Political INcorrect nowadays. Dr. Zhivago could be sue for SH and the other guy, DV+rape. Both novels could be illegal in the West soon, since they glorified women as secondary to men!

Doctor Zhivago is the story of an average man whose strove to achieve something with his life despite the fact that his world had been thrown into the tumultuous upheaval of war and revolution.
Anna Karenina was a woman who could not cope with the changes to her personal circumstances.
Doctor Zhivago made the best of a bad situation with whatever life had to offer. Anna Karenina took her interest in steam engines one step too far and committed suicide rather than live with her own inner misgivings and turmoil.
You be the judge. Of the two, which is the better role model for the youth of today?

They’re both great works of literature dealing with different aspects of the human condition … why does one have to be ‘best’?

Cheers :-)
