Coverage D Questions Homeowners Insurance?
I have a question about Coverage D and what I’m entitled to under my homeowners policy. I know it varies and i will my lawyer review but I’m looking for a general understanding. I was told I’m entitled to fair market value (what it would cost to rent a similar residence) OR claim the loss of use and get reimbursed for rent, food etc… I’m planning on staying with my parents for 1 week before finding a rental so should will I be entitled to fair market value while staying with my parents rent free for that week? also if i choose to take the fair market value will i be able to claim food above and beyond my normal expenses while staying at my parents?
My house in inhabitable for at least 3 months. We are on a small lot in the middle of the town so no room for a mobile home.
You get nothing while staying at your parents.

You’ll have to read the policy.
On a standard homeowners policy, loss of use ONLY triggers when there’s a covered cause of loss that makes the house uninhabitable.
I’ve never seen any "fair market value" policy language – every policy I’ve seen, says "needed to maintain your current standard of living". That doesn’t mean, rent a house in this neighborhood at the same value – it means, give you enough beds and a bathroom and a kitchen. In other words, you don’t GET rental for a 2,000 square foot house – you get a room at a local hotel, until you can find a small apartment rental. For a large claim, with 2-3 months of repair work needed, they’ll typically move a mobile home onto your site.
Plus, to claim it, you have to incur the loss – ie, you’ll have to pay your parents, and then get a receipt from them, and submit it for reimbursement.
Typically, you can claim food – but only the EXTRA expense. If you normally eat out five days a week, but now you have to eat out 7, they’ll give you two days. Also typically, if you have no access to a kitchen for a few days while you’re in a hotel, they’ll give about $25 a day, per person, to eat out – it won’t pay for a Ruth Chris dinner.
Lastly, everything is reimbursed AFTER THE FACT, and only for the time it takes to repair your damages.
