Can I get a dog and keep her outside?
I know you guys hate when people ask questions like this, but I need some answers so I’m hoping you guys can answer anyway.
I’m 16 years old and homeschooled. I spend a lot of time at home.
My dad said I could get a dog, but she would have to stay outside. The only reason is because we rent our house. The landlord says pets aren’t allowed indoors, but keeping a dog in the backyard would be okay.
We do have a shed in our backyard. It’s not run down or anything and it’s very clean. I would put a dog house, blankets, a dog bed, food, water, etc in the shed. My dad said he could cut a square in the wood with a flap on it (like a doggy door) so she could go in and out of the shed as she pleases.
I live in California so the weather isn’t too cold or anything.
I would obviously be spending a lot of time with the dog every day. I plan on taking her for daily walks, playing in the backyard, etc.
Now for my questions…
It doesn’t get very cold here, the lowest it’s been is in the lower 30s. It does get pretty hot in the summer though, so which breeds can handle the heat?
My other question is if I’m being selfish for wanting to keep a dog outdoors? I know many of you are against this. Should I just not get a dog at all?
I really want a dog, but if keeping her outdoors would be cruel, I won’t get one at all.
Thanks for the answers.
Oh and – I would be adopting an adult dog from the shelter. I know keeping a puppy outdoors is completely out of the question.
if you are going to keep a dog outside ,,,, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT GET A DOG !!!!

As long as the dog has proper shelter from the elements rain, slow, hail, ect… a shady place to lie when its hot,
And has proper running space, food and shelter the dog should be fine.
The only way keeping a dog outside is cruel in my opinion is when a person leaves a dog outside without the adequate shelter and food. Or leave the dog out completely unsocialized.

As long as you don’t tie it up and it hqas proper shelter!!! But if you don’t have one BUY ONE or take it inside!!! The basement would work for storms for winter or something though…

My dog has to stay outdoors as well. We rent and she is not allowed in. I was totally against at first but i was not going to get rid of her. She absolutely loves it outside though and as much as I would rather have her inside i know she is okay outside. She is a lab. As long as you keep water out there at all times for your dog it will be fine even when it is hot. labs and golden retrievers are great outdoor dogs. If you get a dog she or he will be fine. Just give it a lot of attention. The important thing is you would be giving it a home.

I honestly don’t think you should get a dog unless you can convince the landlord to have a inside pet.Perhaps you can "bribe" him/her with a pet deposit? that way, if the dog does damage of any sort, he/she will have the money to fix it.Perhaps you could do chores around the house to help your dad out in order to pay for the deposit.
I don’t think very many shelters will allow you to keep a dog outside (iv’e read a few of the shelters policies and they believe that pets are family..family doesn’t live outside and i agree with that). And you can’t lie since you will have to give them your landlords phone number so they can check to make sure you can even have a dog.I would try to butter up the landlord as much as I could.
A lot of Chihuahuas need homes in California.Maybe he/she would think of less mess if you got a chihuahua?

I think its not selfish to want to have a dog they are very trustworthy and reliable and I think that it would be fine to keep the dog outside as long as it has the proper stuff and about the heat and stuff like that you could get a shitzue ( sry bout spelling rong) or mabe a smallish dog because they are usally good with the weather but you should ask some dog experts and vets and dont just ask one or 2 you should ask multipule srry dont think I was much help good luck bye

A dog from a shelter that is already used to being outside is fine
You can build a kennel yourself from old timber, you can get it cheaply. Make sure the kennel is big enough, the door is not huge, and the walls/roof are thick to insulate the dog from the weather.

You and your Dad sound as if you have given this a lot of thought. I think your dog will be in loving hands. Go for it.

The dog may do alright outside as long as its needs for shelter are met. I would worry about the bond between the dog and the family. It may be difficult for the dog to feel a part of the family when it is essentially isolated for most of the day. Would it be possible to get two dogs that are bonded to each other? There were many dog couples looking for new homes during the height of the foreclosures. Let the local rescues know you are willing to take in a pair and I bet they
