Why did they laugh in The Killing Fields (film)?
Okay so, I remember my parents telling me when they were in Thailand in the mid 80’s at the cinema, watching "The Killing Fields" the audience (Thai’s) were laughing. At very inappropriate times.
I’m aware that this is how some cultures, or some people in general deal with extreme stress, but was this the case that time?

Is this short paragraph good?
I am writing a novel about a guy who is killed but lives on in like an afterlife. It will be a chapter from his point of view then one from his wife’s. I am only 13 so it won’t be very good, I just enjoy writing. Could you give me some opinions please? Thanks x

I ran along the street, eager to get home and tell my husband, Ryan, about my day. I looked up at the clear night sky, it was like a navy blue blanket covering the world. Night time was my favorite time of day, the moon was on full show and was reflecting down onto the street. There was only a slight breeze which made the trees sway joyously. Ryan had been acting strange lately, but I put it of as stressing over our money problems. I had went in for a job as an accountant four months ago and today I had been accepted for the job. This meant that I could afford gas to drive my car, instead of walking everywhere. I skipped up to the gate and pushed it open, it groaned in protest as it scraped along the concrete path, it had been hanging of it’s hinges for at least a year now. I walked up the path to the front door, there was something on the door, but in the darkness I couldn’t make it out. I leaned forward slowly and touched it, I brought my finger to my nose and sniffed. It was blood. Shaking, I shoved my hand into my bag and felt around for my keys. Why did I have to be so disorganized? I had a key for everything; the front and back door, every room in the house, cupboards and my car keys. I went through the pile of keys until I found the one I was looking for, my hands were trembling as I unlocked the door. The door swung open, squeaking slightly, the first thing I noticed was the blood stains on the creamy white carpet, black skid marks on the floor, as if someone had been struggling. My gaze followed the blood stains to the foot of the stairs, were Ryan was lying in a pool of blood. I stumbled over to him, tears streaming down my face and blurring my vision. I collapsed to the ground beside him and noticed a gun shot wound in his left temple, there was dried in blood below his nose as if someone had punched him. I reached out and touched his hand. I was trembling. I flinched when I touched him he was as cold as ice. How long had he been lying here? I slowly turned his wrist over and felt for a pulse. Nothing. He looked like a wax work with more realistic details. He couldn’t be dead, it was just this morning I had woken up to him pottering around in the kitchen singing along tunelessly to the radio. It seemed like a lifetime ago. A strange noise escaped my lips and I started screaming but no-one could hear me in this deserted old town.
I screamed and screamed, but no one could here me in this old deserted town.
Sorry about using ‘here’ instead of ‘hear’ I sometimes do that. I get carried away whilst writing.

sounds good but if you should try to cut down on some of the personal pronouns beginning you sentences. mix up the sentence structure a little and it will be great :)

Too many personal pronouns. Oh, and please avoid COMMA SPLICES!

Overall, yay! I’m applauding.

Paths of Glory

Paths of Glory
Paths of Glory (1957)

IMDB rating: 8.60

Plot: In Stanley Kubrick’s “Paths of Glory” war is viewed in terms of power. This mesmerizing, urgent film about a true episode in World War I combines the idea that class differences are more important than national differences with the cannon-fodder theory of war, the theory that soldiers are merely pawns in the hands of generals who play at war is if it were a game of chess. The result of this amazing film has been the emergence of one of the great talents in contemporary cinema, the master whose greatest work was yet to come.

Paths of Glory questions?
1. Why is it called Paths of Glory?
2.Why might it have been called an anti- war film?
3. In the last scene, why is the song so important, what is its significance?

1. The title comes from a poem by Thomas Gray called "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard":

http://www.blupete.com/Literature/Poetry /Elegy.htm

…Let not Ambition mock their useful toil,
Their homely joys, and destiny obscure;
Nor Grandeur hear with a disdainful smile
The short and simple annals of the Poor.

The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power,
And all that beauty, all that wealth e’er gave,
Awaits alike th’ inevitable hour:-
The paths of glory lead but to the grave.<<

Nor you, ye Proud, impute to these the fault
If Memory o’er their tomb no trophies raise,
Where through the long-drawn aisle and fretted vault
The pealing anthem swells the note of praise….

The poem is written about a familiar theme: we are all equal in death, and yet in life, the generals send the privates to die because they are "better."

2. The film demonstrates that many maneuvers on the battlefield are not done to win the war, but to satisfy the pride of generals and leaders who want their names in the history books. The General in Paths of Glory wants to be known as the one who took "the Ant Hill" — but it’s the men in the trenches who face the machine guns and barbed wire…they are paying the price so some general can be immortalized in a museum somewhere.

3. The last scene is something of a non-sequitor; the trial is over, the court martial has been concluded, and three guinea pigs have been shot as a token gesture of punishment. (One, as I recall, was picked because he was a witness to real cowardice — and he had to be put away.)

After this, the men are in a bar, drunk and crude, boorish even; when a young woman is dragged on stage to sing, the men go wild and she is scared for her life. Kirk Douglas (Colonel Dax) passes outside and, listening to their din, feels a sneer of contempt for them. Maybe, for a moment, he feels sympathy with the Generals — the enlisted men are pigs, they deserve to die…

But when the nervous woman starts to sing, the soldiers feel a sense of their hopelessness; they are trapped, and she is trapped. Even though she is a civilian, she is in danger too; a stray artillery shell could demolish half her village and her with it. In a moment of unspoken empathy, they start to sing with her, and Dax realizes that the men have some redeeming characteristics after all, and lets them have 10 more minutes before they have to fall out.

Defiance vs Inglourious Basterds?
Defiance (2008) was a Holocaust movie which was based on a true story of how two brothers, who were Jewish, and members of a small village fled to the woodlands when Nazis invaded and began to devastate the area. The brothers unite with other Jews who had fled and they work as a team to try to defeat the germans in skirmishes. Their numbers of their army grow to over a thousand but it is still not enough to give them an advantage over the germans.

Inglorious Basterds (2009) Is another WWII movie, only there are very few Jews to fight against the Germans. As a matter of fact, there are only 8 Jewish American soldiers, an American team leader, and Hugo Stiglitz. They terrorize German squads and cause massive chaos to the germans. Eventually, they manage to kill hitler himself after sacrificing many of their members in a failed meeting point, in a basement, and at the Cinema where they attempt to kill hitler, which is a sucess. They end up scaring an SS leaders forehead for life and the team leader (Brad Pitt) and "the Little Jew" (B.J. Novak) end up the only survivors of the "Basterds."

So, which film is better? Defiance is a true story, but Inglorious Basterds is beautifully executed, even for a Historical Fiction movie.

So essentially, Which is better?
Defiance or Inglourious Basterds?

ughh those are my two favorite movies of all time. I love love WWll movies and I’m a huge WWll buff. sorry I know that wasn’t much of a help at all, but I personally think they’re both great :)
