Chances into getting into ANY UC?
I’m a junior in high school, and I haven’t taken the SATs/SAT II yet but if you look at my stats.. What are my chances? etc.
So here are my grades..
(Should I even bother posting freshman year?)
Grades: First Semester / Second Semester
Freshman
Spanish 1: B+ / A
World History Honors : A / A-
English 1 Honors: B+ / A
Biology 1: A / A
Algebra 2: B / B
Sophomore
Health (summer school): A
Spanish 2: A- / A-
AP European History: C / B (I got a 3 on the AP exam… LOL)
Chemistry P: C / C (I HATE YOU, CHEMISTRY… my "oh gosh i can’t do science" epiphany)
Dance (PE credits so not counted toward GPA): A+ / A+
Trigonometry: D / Statistics: A (Trig/Stats is one year; 1st & 2nd semester, respectively)
English 2 Honors: A / A+
soooo my sophomore year’s first semester GPA definitely took a plunge with a 2.91… weighted (you don’t want to know my unweighted GPA…). I really did raise up my grades though by second semester (3.6) so now my Academic Weighted GPA is 3.26. AHHHH…
oh gosh. What are the chances of getting into a UC with a D?! Is it even possible?!
I can’t believe I failed Trig, and by TWO PERCENT (should I talk about it in my personal statement?). Sadly, I’m retaking the course this year (as a junior), but fortunately(? in my perspective), I got "that" teacher who’s known to be "the easiest A ever".. so I think my 2.91 GPA is guaranteed to change into a 3.4ish (replacing that D with an A).
(also, trig is definitely waaaaaaay easier the second time around)
I’m aiming for a 4.0 (WEIGHTED) GPA this year.
Junior Year Schedule
0. AP US History
1. English 3 Honors (which is now on a weighted scale! WOOT!)
2. Trigonometry (one semester)
3. Spanish 3
4. ASB/Leadership/Student Government
5. AP Psychology
6. AP Probability/Statistics
OH YEAH! 0-6, baby! Well, by second semester, it’ll be 1-6 (I can’t handle 0 period!!!).
Sooo I’m aiming for a B in APUSH, English, AP Psych, & AP Stats (I know I’ll get an A in at least one of these bad boys though… cough, AP Psych <3).. and A’s in Trigonometry (although these grade points are added to sophomore year), Spanish, & ASB… Thus leading to a weighted 4.0 GPA.
which, if I do get a 4.0 GPA this WHOLE year, my lame GPA would be up to… ([3.4+3.6+4.0+4.0]/4)=. 3.75!!! Pretty good in my opinion… (3.5+ is considered an honors student at my school & 3.75+ is high honors).
Also, my officer positions are: Historian for Badminton Club, ICC Commissioner for Class of 2011, Public Relations Commissioner of ASB, and Chess Club president… mhmmm! Chess ftw.
The clubs I shalll be in this year: Kiwins, Key Club (member already), Marine Science (member), Comic Book Club (member), Mock Trial (member in 9th grade.. trying to get into it again), Vietnamese Club, Chess Club (member), Student Government (member), Class of 2011 (member), NHS, CSF (member), Badminton (member)
heh.. that’s not too much.. right!? I guess I should be steady with my clubs sad.gif but there are so many cool clubs at my school, I just have to join ‘em!
Also, I (along with my friend) run Pennies for Patients, Project Angel Tree, Red Ribbon Week/Blood Drive, Canned Food Drives, etc. at our school.
I’m so kewl(.. not really).
I’m quite the fan of community service
and this would prob affect things: I’m Asian.
Colleges I want to get into (ordered by how much I want to attend there):
UC Irvine (first choice!!!)
UC Santa Barbara
UC Davis
UC Merced
UC Riverside
What should I try doing? What SAT score should I aim for? etc. etc.
btw, I want to major in Political Science
UC admission evaluation is based on a variety of factors. All UCs favor factors such as the rigor of your HS curriculum (number of UC-approved honors/AP/IB/CC courses completed), excellent weighted and unweighted GPA, and demonstrated leadership abilities. You are also compared to your peers, meaning your academic and extracurricular achievements are viewed in context of students in your HS who applied to the UCs this year and up to 3 years prior. Given the number of factors considered and the complex data involved, it is essentially impossible for anyone to accurately predict your chance.
Berkeley is general achievement oriented (academic or extracurricular), meaning admissions is willing to overlook bad grades/test scores when excellent extracurriculars and/or horrible hardships are in the equation. Berkeley is especially interested in students who will take advantage of what Berkeley has to offer and become the engine of social change.
The rest of UCs tend to be academic achievement oriented, meaning fantastic grades and stellar test scores are essential to be competitive. Students who demonstrate ability to achieve extraordinary extracurriculars and/or overcoming horrible hardships while maintaining excellent academic achievement are favored. However, these UC campuses rarely overlook bad grades/test scores even if extraordinary extracurriculars and/or horrible hardships are in the equation.
Repeat the course in which you received a D to erase the bad grade from your GPA. Stop freaking out and focus your energy on bringing up your grades.

Buckle down, bring up your GPA as planned, get tutoring for your SAT test and you can get into at least Merced and Riverside.

I’m sorry but you have a really LOW chance of getting in into a UC with the exception of UC Merced and Riverside if you don’t bring your GPA up. It’s not just about having advanced classes, it doesn’t matter if you were in Algebra 2 freshman year and then Trig in sophomore year when you almost failed one of them with a D. The average weighted GPA for getting into UCI, UCD, UCSB is around 3.6-3.9.
At least you have tons of community service, so you might get in. The average GPA admitted that I gave is the GPA of admitted students from 25th-75 percentile. There are few that get in around your GPA. So there is hope.
