IMDB rating: 6.80 Plot: Shifty timber tycoon Gregory Stark (‘Ryan O’Neal’ (qv)) is being systematically blackmailed and the use of regular private detectives have proved ineffective. Stark decides to call upon the services of the renowned, reclusive Daryl Zero (‘Bill Pullman (qv)), supposedly the world’s greatest detective. Stark is very surprised to find himself discussing the intimate details of the case with Zero’s amiable associate Steve Arlo (‘Stiller, Ben’ (qv)) who explains Zero’s propensity for never meeting with clients. Zero, using his two ‘obs’ of objectivity and observation, quickly discovers the identity of the blackmailer but continues the case in order to discover exactly why the seemingly ordinary Gloria Sullivan (‘Kim Dickens’ (qv)) is attacking Stark in this fashion. As Zero becomes more engrossed in the case and, even worse for him, becomes personally involved with Gloria he is forced to decide between the blackmailer and his client! |

Does Speech Continue to Signify in the Era of Obama?
Does Obama’s Over-Use of Speeches Give a Bad Name to Speech Itself?
When I was growing up significant discourse was considered to be the central focal point of the cultivated life. It was what the dinner table was all about. Later this became the seminar table. Still later it became the counsel table. Significant discouse is purposive, it is concise, it is intending real conduct that actually does occur and that leads to outcomes that make a difference. It is not like rhetoric of no consequence or babble of no meaning. It is more like strategic planning and orders of battle.
In my little town, people are highly suspicious of speech already. To them, speech is mere vanity. For them life is about hands to work hearts to God. They are functionally aphasic by choice. It’s like living in a Fransciscan monestary. They do work very hard. They have no time for talk. They hate prattle, or useless speech that benefits nobody. They are not big on improv either, I can tell you from painful experience. They are mainly agrarian people — farmers, builders, lawn care people, home repair people. They don’t want shilly-shally, they want to "git er done". Most of their talking they do at Lowes and Home Depot. It’s about pipes and electrical fixtures.
Me, speech is my abode. My only habitat. It’s my little part of the tree. It guess it’s where the chattering class lives. So, I am sensitive when somebody devalues speech to the point where it becomes an object of general ridicule. Obama has done that. He’s given speech a bad name. He’s made "significant discourse" and object of contumely. By making 8362 speeches with zero outcomes he has become a laughingstock himself, but more importantly he has left little room in his wake for anybody to speak in a way that would be deemed significant. It’s a scorched earth effect, like after a meteor hits.
If speech goes, what happens to Western culture? What happens to me? Quo vadis?
This is the question on which I seek your knowledge and information. Please answer my question.
Obama’s discourse is ingenuine.
His speeches are written for him.
Without the use of a a teleprompter Obama cannot continue a line of thought on his own. This has been proven of more than one occasion.
Search DEVAL PATRICK and OBAMA and you will see blatant use of speech recycling!
Our world leaders are puppets to the architects of a broader agenda.

Honestly, I can hardly address your topic because I think it’s so lame that you’re blaming Obama. His flaccid speechifying is the norm for politicians, not the source of the plague of anti-intellectualism. Try reading a compilation of GWB quotes. Cultural decline goes across party lines, and partisanship itself is anti-intellectual.

The idea that Obama gives too many speeches is ludicrous. If you hate him, jsut say so, don’t come up with BS reasons and act like there’s a principle at work in your dislike of him.
