what the hell is wrong with my dog? caution tough problem!?
OK, heres the skinny> my dog recently started licking himself alot and i didnt think much of it, except maybe he could get hotspots from it. later on i noticed these hotspot-like lesions on his body, so i treated them accordingly and they healed fine. when i removed the E-collar from him, he went straight back to licking( oh btw he licks the regions of both his thighs and the most cranial aspect of his sternum, as well as his forelimbs). i noticed how he was getting the lesions, he kept gnawing at the regions he was licking so i figured that i had to take him to the vet. the vets did some bloodwork as well as bacterial cultures; they said that he had model blood except for some hypoglycaemia which could have been a mistake and they still have yet to get back to me on those cultures but i figure that that doesnt matter right now cuz all his lesions are more or less healed. my problem is that as soon as i take off the E-collar, he starts the licking and gnawing untill he gets the red,juicy, exudative lesions agaain. so basically i need some educated suggestions about whats going on with him or maybe some guesses with what to treat him with. ive already ruled out a systemic infection due to the lack of a stress leukon in the blood. ooo they also did skin scrapings and turns out he doesnt have mange mites either. currently what im thinking is seborrheic dermatitis and i was thinking about using something with selenium sulphide in it, perhaps selsun blue…… what do you think? ooo did i mention that the vets dont believe me when i tell them he keeps licking and gnawing? its because he doesnt do it around them, why? cuz he’s scared duh, too scared to worry about his skin.

An anti-bark collar can be too sensitive. When the dog drinks or licks it gives him a correction. Probably when you take it off he is probably safe to do some licking so goes crazy.

The new collars have levels so a dog isn’t corrected easily when the collar is set at the right level.

My dog does the same thing with his paws. It’s more of a mental habit than anything physically wrong. It could be out of boredom or just kind of an OCD habitual problem. I provide my dog a wide variety of toys and switch them out on a weekly/monthly basis. Kongs worked wonders. Stick some treats in, and he’ll keep busy trying to get every crumb out instead of licking himself. Once the Kong is empty, he goes back to licking. I’ve also gotten him the hollow sterile bones (pure white, they don’t splinter) with the stuffing inside of it. I provide him with bully sticks. There are times when his tongue is so tired from licking food out of crevices of toys that he gives up licking for the rest of the day. I’ve asked my vet about this, as well. He had stated that if nothing is truely wrong, it’s mental. We’ve gotten blood tests, skin scrapings, even provided him with phenobarbitol for allergies, changed his food (any food allergies?), etc. Each time, he would continue to lick. Keeping him busy is what did the trick, though.

Also…had the same problem with a previous vet. Brought my rabbit in because he was scratching at his ears a lot (though had no signs of mites). "Well he’s not scratching at his ears now." was the vet’s response. "No s*** Sherlock! He’s scared out of his mind and if you knew anything about rabbits, you would know that they wouldn’t be ‘grooming’ themselves when they are scared." was my response. lol. Either find another vet, try switching the food (anything with wheat/corn/soy/by-products is a no…common dog food allergies), or try keeping him busy.

Taking the collar off may not mean anything. He could be allergic to a new carpet in your house. Have you installed a new carpet?

Have you or your landscaper sprayed your lawn with chemicals to fertilize it and kill or control weeds? It could be that the dog is allergic to those chemicals.

Has something changed in your home or yard? Did you get a new pet or even a new baby in the house?

Did you change the dog food he eats?

Has this started since your heat came on if you live in a cold area? If so, perhaps your house is too dry.

Then there is the old joke about dogs licking their genitals, the question is "why do dogs lick their genitals – answer is "because they can!"

You can always try a new vet too! You can take a video of the dog in action if they do not believe you.

You might want to do an allergy panel on the dog to see if there are any inhaled or contact sources of allergy that may be causing this. Also, skin scrapings are good for finding the mites that cause demodectic mange but sarcoptic mange mites are hard little critters to find. You may want to treat your dog for it just as a precaution. Revolution has been proven to work on sarcoptic mange when used twice two weeks apart (1 today 1 in two weeks). It’s off label but the drug reps have told us (techs) and the vets that it’s perfectly safe.

Another possibility is an anxiety disorder. I’ve seen dogs that have licked their skin to the point where bone was exposed in one night! Talk about the possibility of using xanax, it’s like prozac for animals and really helps with situations like this. Don’t give up, and if you think that it’s waranted, find a new vet!

EDIT: For those who answered before me, an e-collar is short for elizabethan collar. It’s that satellite dish type collar used to prevent animals from getting to areas that they may irritate while medicating or healing. It is not a shock collar or a flea collar.

However in order to keep your dog from licking and causing further irritation and damage to his/her skin you should try this miracle medicine called nu stock it stops irritation,promotes fast healing and hair growth as for the collar keep it on until he/she no longer scratches at it for longer than 20-25 days.

My dog has flea bite dermatitis. Ultimately, even though she is on Frontline and does not have fleas, Frontline does not work unless the flea bites. So, a flea jumps on her, bites her, dies, and sends her into a frenzy of biting and licking and hot spots.
A few months ago the vet tested her for hypothyroidism and it came back positive. This is, many times, the underlying cause that leads to a sensitivity (allergies, dermatitis, etc).
My dog is now on soloxine 2x daily to regulate her thyroid, and the vet gave us an emergency stash of Vetalog – basically a steroid that stops itching temporarily – for when her flea bite dermatitis acts up. Also, I use a soothing rinse after I bathe her. I don’t know how dandruff medicated shampoo will help, but they make shampoos specifically for soothing an itchy dog. I would recommend that first.
A possibility is food allergens (maybe he’s allergic to chicken? grains?), dust, pollen, mold, the same as you and me! You say your vet doesn’t believe you, take him to another one, preferably who specializes in skin conditions. Problems like this don’t go away on their own.
If your vet does not believe you, try another one!

The constant licking causes inflamation in the skin and,over time,the skin in that area becomes thickened.
