Raw feeders-Day of fasting?
Ever since I started feeding a raw prey model diet, I’ve been making one day a week a day of fasting. I give extra food the day before and the day after but for one day the dogs get zero food. I read that this was the best way to feed raw because it gives the digestive system a chance to rest and the body a chance to detoxify.
When I tell people I feed this way, they give me strange looks or tell me that’s mean to the dog. I’ve been told that detoxing isn’t real and that fasting the dog won’t do anything beneficial.
For the time being I’m not planning to change how I feed but I’m curious whether other raw feeders to this and what some opinions on it are.
Also, completely unrelated but my family is doing one of those things where you get a letter from a needy child asking for a certain present for Christmas. The kid (8 year old girl) said she wants a "lindpislst". We have no idea what that is supposed to mean. There weren’t any contextual clues to help out. I tried googling it and got nothing so if anyone has any idea what this could mean it would be greatly appreciated. We’d really like to get her the present she wants.
I mostly feed my dogs chicken with all the bones still in. I give chicken hearts, gizzards, and liver in addition to the regular meat. Most days they get a couple spoonfuls of green tripe and 2-3 eggs with the shell every week. I also give a few teaspoons of fish oil here and there.
Sunday is also my dog’s fasting day so on Saturday and Monday I feed them each half a chicken. Thursday is fish day so I make half the meal some kind of fish. Other than that I just feed chicken thighs and wings and whatever cheap meats I can pick up at the store. I try to throw in some turkey, beef, and pork every week to keep things interesting.
Also, when I pointed out to people that wolves don’t eat everyday, I was told wolves also don’t live as long as domestic dogs so it’s not a good idea use them as a model.
That is NOT mean at all. Why is everything mean nowadays? Gosh. Many owners & breeders who feed raw food to their dogs especially do this & although I don’t do it to mine(may do it someday), I do it to myself all the time. I fast for one day a week. I always feel very refreshed the following day. It cleans out whatever crap that is still left in the stomach & intestines. I don’t feel hungry at all when I fast because I am so used to it. Just as long the dogs have plenty of fresh water the whole day, they’ll be absolutely fine.

Although I’m not a raw feeder, I have heard what you are describing from other raw feeders. Basically one day you feed a little bit more, and the next day a light meal or nothing depending on how much was fed the day before. Detoxing is real, and is usually noticed when people first start on raw. After going from kibble to raw, some dogs get diarrhea from the detox. Not surprised that some people don’t know, because there are a lot of opinions when it comes to raw feeding. Wish I could help you out with other other question, but I have no clue.

I raw feed and fast my dogs on Saturdays - actually, it’s a partial fast as I give them raw eggs Saturday mornings out on the patio (good fun to watch them crack them open - they all have different methods)… and they get a few treats throughout the day (or they get the yellow urka gurkas). If I’m at a dog show they don’t get the eggs - only get bait in the ring, a small snack in the evening… and usually don’t get FED fed until Sun after the show. They win at the shows…

although it’s not something i practise, i have heard of people fasting their dogs like this and there is nothing wrong as long as the dog remains healthy and happy. i have also heard of a different way, where the dog is fed one day, many small meals and large meaty bones throughout the day, then fasts every second day. once again not something i practise, but i guess i can see the logic behind it, being that most wild carnivores do not eat every day but when they make a kill, they eat it slowly, all day long. i think what ever works for you and your dog, go for it!
oh and that other thing, no idea.

I don’t fast as such but I do reduce a meal if the day before was extra big. If one day is something huge like a turkey drumstick then the next is a lamb heart or something similar.
I don’t think the purpose is the de-tox but more to mimic ‘wild’ feeding habits and to give the dog an opportunity to eat a really complicated meal for extra teeth cleaning.

yeah i used to do days off for my siberian…he’d get fish (half kilogram), then chicken (whole and over a kilogram), and then a day off. So he got two fasting days a week. he fed like this for a few months and seemed perfectly fine.
i only stopped cos he started to not finish his whole chickens.
he settled into 2-500gms of food daily (chicken legs/beef/pork/organs/eggs) with no off days. his preference. if i fed him whole chickens he’d probably only eat once a week - must be his slow metabolism.
but yeah, if ur dogs like it, a day off isn’t gonna hurt them and is probably good for them. when i was feeding with off days i thought it was very good for him. he was happy and well-behaved like always. i think i just feed daily cos it gives me peace of mind!
