 Dancer Upstairs, The (2002)
IMDB rating: 6.90
Plot: The story of Detective Agustin Rejas, a man clinging to the hope of an impossible love in an impossible world. Tracking Ezequiel, a delusional anarchist who incites the downtrodden masses to join in his brutal revolution against the fascist government in their unnamed Latin American country, Rejas finds solace in his sense of self-respect and the joy that his daughter and wife bring him. Then he meets Yolanda—his daughter’s soulfully beautiful ballet teacher—a woman who sparks his long-forgotten passions and represents all that is good and all that is corrupt in their troubled country. But she, who appears to be a shelter from the storm, may in actuality be the storm’s eye. Ultimately, as the revolution intensifies and the net closes around hunter and hunted alike, the dancer’s truth will prove as elusive as the revolutionary’s cause and the detective’s peace.

I'm in the middle of a tough situation in my life right now, and I need help. Can you help me?
I’m 12 years old, and in August 2007 I was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis. I’m not going through the whole thing, but I have a 30 degree curve and I’ve been wearing a Boston brace since August 2007. The brace adds so much stress onto my life. At night, if I can’t find the right shirt that the brace goes over, I have to keep running upstairs and downstairs until I can find a good shirt, and if I can’t- no brace for that night. I personally think that you have to be extremely strong mentally and emotionally to handle something like this being thrown at you out of nowhere at such a young age. I don’t have ANY curvature, and you can’t even tell I have it. I have won the "Most Beautiful Posture" award in my school for the past 8 years. I’m a competitive gymnast, and dancer. I am thinking of giving up on the brace compeletly, and stop going to my orthopedic surgeon for check-up appointments. Every check-up, it has been STAYING at 30 degrees. Should I give up on the brace? Any advice?
When it says I don’t have ANY curvature… I mean I don’t have ANY ROTATION.
Sorry about that!
Hi Jennifer,
You’re right that this is a lot to bear for someone so young. You’re also right that you have to be a mentally and emotionally strong person. You’re not alone. You don’t have to bear it by yourself. You have family, friends, and many support web sites that will help. Also, many people are wearing braces at your age.
This post seems like an "I’m very frustrated with my back, my brace, what I’m going through, etc." post. Wearing a brace is very frustrating. There are days that it just boils over and you get mad and take it out on the person that happens to be standing next to you. You’ll get past this, though. Take a few deep breaths, get a good nights sleep, and you’ll feel better tomorrow (I hope).
You’re very fortunate that you’re wearing a Boston brace. I wore a Milwaukee brace which is quite a bit more challenging because it is so visible.
The good news is that you’ve stayed at 30 degrees. This doesn’t sound like much, but it is great! The challenge is to keep at 30 degrees throughout all of your growth spurts until you’re done growing.
Remember, the purpose of a brace isn’t to fix the curve but rather to keep the curve from getting worse. So what you’ve told us is that the brace is doing its job. This doesn’t always happen. A good number of kids wear a brace and their curve increases anyway.
My advice - keep with the brace because its doing its job. As for your shirts, perhaps whoever is doing the wash could help by making sure the shirts are kept in a special place. Tagging them, as someone else suggested, is also a very good idea.

I was diagnosed with a terminal illness at a young age as well. It affected things I like to do, and definitely made me feel negatively about myself. When I felt good, I would ask the same thing, maybe I will stop taking my pills or stop going to the doctor cause I feel fine. But you need to realize you may not be noticing rotation, or you may feel fine beacuse of your doctor, and because of the brace. If you risk it, and you go against the doctors advice, you risk worsening your condition. I know what you mean, you’re too young to go through this, and it’s not fair. You’re right. But talk about with the surgeon, don’t do anything without consulting someone first because the last thing you want is for this to get worse as you get older. Hope that helps a little.

you are twelve…i think it should be up to your parents….if you continue or not..but you will have problems for the rest of your life if you do not get it corrected now….if you have problems with your shirts at night..mark the ones you know will work..whether on the tag or whatever that way..when its time for bed..you go look for one with a mark on the tag..no more running up and down the stairs…you have also only been in the brace for around 5 or 6 months..it takes time be patient…you should write in a diary about your issues with it..you never know you could make some money off of it when you are out of treatment by publishing it for others to read while they are going thru the same thing…good luck

I would not advise that as a nurse or a mom. Have you looked into syrgical correction or if you can bear it until age 18, then you should be through growing. Your quality of life will be better if you manage this. If you know which shirts work best, buy several of them just to wear at night. Hope this helps. Talk to your doctor about other options.
