This is by no means a evil movie. Instead, it is an moving adventure anecdote in which the villain happens to be a werewolf and the hero is a kid with a severe handicap. He may not have the utilize of his legs but he does have bravery, a sister that takes him seriously and an uncle who is too considerable fun to be a really proper role model.

When a town his plagued with sudden a violent murders tensions grow high and neighbors become suspicious of one another. At first no one takes the plan of a werewolf seriously but the bodies continue to pile up. Eventually a young boy confinded to a wheelchair sees the wolf firsthand an escapes on the zouped up wheelchair his uncle built for him. His sister knows that he is a royal hurt in the backside but she also knows his character and believes him. She discovers the identity of the lycanthropist. Unfortunately, the wolf also learns theirs. The stage is situation for a confrontation.
One of the things I like about this movie is that it depicts young people able to act well and effect respectable decisions in spite of the attitude of the adults. It does not depict young people only as selfish idiots seeking only their maintain gratification. Here it is the youngsters that establish the day with the wait on of an uncle with childing tendencies.

It’s a fun movie, not at all serious, unbiased fun.
You don’t normally ask to obtain well-crafted characters in scare movies, which is why SILVER BULLET can accept a first-time viewer by surprise. There are suspenseful scenes aplenty, but it really is the characters and their relationships that effect this movie stand out. Corey Haim is Marty, eleven years traditional and reliant on a motorized wheelchair to procure around. Megan Follows is his fifteen year veteran sister Jane, jealous of the special attention her brother gets because of his disability. Their parents are Bob and Nan, and Nan’s brother is played by Gary Busey. Uncle Red is the sort of relative that families are not proud of and would probably rather not associate with at all; it’s discouraged for Nan then that Red loves his nephew Marty so great.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Silver Bullet! Click Here
Marty is fair getting extinct enough to realise that Red isn’t exactly an exemplary human being. Early in the film a friend of Marty’s scares Jane with a snake, causing her to plunge flat in a puddle of muddy water and raze the outfit she’s been showing off. It’s the sort of prank that a brother would pull on a sister and then immediately regret it, and Marty’s face shows the regret not only at that moment, but later at night when he gives Jane money to succor compose up for it even though it wasn’t his fault. At that point she apologises for verbally wounding Marty in retaliation by telling him that Uncle Red, his idol, is a useless drunk.
Because Marty gets preferential treatment from everyone, Jane always feels like she gets no attention, and that carries over to some of the reviews on this position that mention she’s a minor character. The importance of her character (especially as the emotional center of the film) is too easily overlooked. When Marty confesses his nighttime encounter with a werewolf to her, she believes him enough to support inspect for evidence the next day, and her experience leaves her utterly convinced that Marty’s record is the truth. At that point the familial relationship between brother and sister (and eventually Uncle Red) begins to strengthen until it reaches its peak at the film’s very raze with a heartfelt and touching (and not at all saccharine) section of narration. The movie is narrated by Tovah Feldshuh as a grown-up Jane, and it takes region in the summer of 1976 (unbiased ignore those anachronistic Diet Coke cans in the garage) . It’s a combination of the beautifully-done narration, the unusually romantic earn and the genuinely pleasurable acting and interaction between the leads (Haim, Everett McGill as the town’s concerned Reverend Lowe, and especially Follows and Busey) that gives the movie an almost lyrical sweetness that not only is unexpected from a low-budget terror movie but also quite simply *works*.
This DVD edition is quite nice in the dwelling of describe quality. Anamorphic widescreen at about 2.35:1, proper disagreement and sharpness, nothing distracting like severe edge enhancement or anything. A very sparkling image. Sound is great too… but the disc falls flat in the position of extras. Basically, there aren’t ANY. One wishes they could have included the commentary that comes with the R2 edition (I occupy) . But this movie is trustworthy enough to detached warrant a station in your collection even without the extras.

This is a tight ogle at the life of a Peruvian man as he journeys to the Amazon in search of medicines not available to his people. The narrative strays here and there to search for at wildlife and other facets of the Amazon set. I liked this enough to retract it and the characterize quality is good on the money for high definition as is the audio quality. I’d like to perceive a documentary strictly on the wildlife and plants with the same PQ and AQIt’s a short film but you don’t feel cheated.
The documentary is really quite fantastic in its portray quality and imagery. While relatively short, like other Imax films, it provides a general overview of different areas of the Amazon dwelling.

I came into this particular Biography video with a exiguous trepidation. Charles Dickens is one of my earliest and most important heroes, the man who first awakened in me a deep like for literature and a desire to one day attempt to gain my acquire contributions to the field. I already knew, though, that Dickens was not a necessarily ecstatic man and that he had treated his wife in a manner I found troubling. What other shortcomings might this video announce to me? As it turns out, my fears were baseless, as this is an insightful yet very respectful glimpse at a man whom I now better understand and certainly unruffled respect.
I knew small about Dickens’ early life, but this video makes it obvious that his experiences as a youth did considerable to shape him as a writer. His disaster and personal demons maintained the fire of genius that burned in his soul and led him to push himself always, even up until the very kill of his life. Born into the lower middle class of early nineteenth century England, Dickens suffered the shame of seeing his father eventually cast into debtors’ prison; he himself was forced to do menial labor which appalled him during that harsh period of his life. This, the biographers show, motivated him to work tirelessly no matter how great success he found, using his pen to support forestall the nightmare of poverty overtaking his life again. His progression through a number of jobs eventually led him into writing, and his first success came in Sketches by Boz, in which he wrote (anonymously at that point) numerous runt accounts of the people and events he had seen during his travels. The rejection by his first cherish left its impress on his soul, but the man poured everything into his work and, after the appearance of The Pickwick Papers, met with wonderful success. In the mean time, he married and eventually had ten children. Before leavings his 20s, Dickens was a famed and immensely approved writer. The serialization of his early novels brought his works to the masses as well as society’s elite, serving to execute him the most acclaimed writer of his era. Yet serene he was never elated.
In his personal life, success could never fill off feelings of depression and a general dissatisfaction with his life, and in his later years he grew quite frosty toward his wife, eventually separating from her. He seems to have become infatuated with a young actress at that time, but scholars debate the existence of a physical relationship between the two. The most uncommon aspect of Dickens’ life seems to be his feelings for one of his sisters-in-law who died at the tragic age of 17. She, it would seem, understood Dickens more than his wife ever could – or so Dickens believed – and her death came as a lasting blow to him. Almost all of these repressed feelings and private fears found their plan into his novels, as Dickens wrote some of the most autobiographical novels of all time. Most of the quotes mature here in this video to interpret aspects of Dickens’ life are actually lines taken from his novels, bits of private introspection spoken by characters but relating in the clearest of ways to the author himself.

This video provides viewers an informative, though-provoking contemplate at the life of Charles Dickens; whether the reference to personal demons oversteps the bounds of truth or not is hard to say, but obviously the darker episodes in Dickens’ life cast great fuel onto the fire that made him the 19th century’s greatest literary disclose and secured him a legacy that will endure until the demolish of time.
A&E’s biography does big justice to a truly gifted writer! I am a large Dicken’s fan and this video was exceptional in it’s quality and relate. We discover Dickens from his early childhood through to his death and learn about how singular moments in his life helped perform some of literatures most enduring characters. The length of time is perfect and the verbalize is thoroughly appropriate and easily holds one’s attention. Experts, including, his very contain astronomical grandson, contribute to making this an intriguing, educational and fun video to ogle. Any Dickens fan will be inspired by this video as it allows you to stare his astonishing, at times scary, characters through the eyes of the author himself.

As a large “Re-Animator” fan, I really looked forward to Stuart Gordon’s contribution to Showtime’s “Masters of Terror” anthology series. Season One brought us “H.P. Lovecraft’s Dreams in the Witch-House”–which sadly was not one of my favorites. Season Two’s offering is “The Shadowy Cat.” But while I enjoyed this episode grand better, I tranquil don’t know how warmly it will be embraced by those seeking out this series. Not a outmoded fright record, “The Dusky Cat” is a historical (but fictional) fable of the life of Edgar Allen Poe. The record documents a descent into madness and its scare is derived from this–whether or not that seems spicy may be a matter of conception.

The episode features Jeffrey Combs (always a delight) as Poe. Struggling and impoverished, he lives in a sad and dreadful status with his ill wife. Attempting to sell his poetry to survive, he is also sinking into desperation, alcoholism and insanity. There really isn’t distinguished more situation than that–this is a account that is reliant on mood rather than sage. Combs does well with the various aspects of Poe’s dementia and there is plenty of macabre humor interspersed. Shrinking by visions of his wife and menaced by household pets, there are moments of sincere gruesomeness and gore to be appreciated.
I enjoyed the film’s literary references and setup as a fan of Poe, but some may score the beginning a bit plain. The story takes a while to develop–but that never bothered me. The ending does absorb a frantic slither and has some vast effects, but if you’re a lover of animals–you might want to steer obvious. Combs is a uniquely animated actor and this is a must-see for his fans. Otherwise, I’ll yell a cautious recommendation. About 3 1/2 stars for me, and that’s about my average for most episodes of “Masters of Fright.” KGHarris, 05/07.
The Murky Cat, directed by Stuart Gordon and written by Dennis Paoli & Stuart Gordon, features the big Edgar Allen Poe (Jeffrey Combs), out of literary inspiration and short on cash, tormented by an inky feline who will either end his sanity or spur him to write one of his greatest awe stories ever.

It’s nice to gaze Stuart Gordon’s bewitch on something other than H.P. Lovecraft (I haven’t seen Edmund yet) . I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised by his select on The Shadowy Cat and it might honest be my popular of his work to date aside from the first Re-Animator film.
Gordon does an wonderful job of turning the emotional but bloodless work of Poe and turning it into a titanic guignol helpful time, and while he may not gawk the fraction as worthy as, say, Christina Ricci, Combs makes for a highly believable Poe.
Everything from the bit parts, to the space decoration, to the animal actors is estimable in The Dusky Cat. Don’t miss this one… it’s (sorry) the cat’s meow!

“Le Moko? A prince of plunder,” says Inspector Slimane. “Fifteen convictions, 33 daylight robberies, two bank holdups. And burglaries? We haven’t enough fingers in this room on which to count them all. How could he not be admired? And such a generous boy! He wears his heart on his sleeve. As quickly with a smile for his friends as a knife for foes. So charming.”

Pepe le Moko (Jean Gabin) fled France for Algiers after a robbery, and has been holed up in the Casbah for two years. He’s a major crime figure and the police, as long as he stays in the Casbah’s labyrinth of streets, stairways and alleys, protected and warned by the people who live there, can’t touch him. But le Moko is tired of his fate. He longs for France and freedom. He’s bored with his life and with his mistress (Line Noro) . The Casbah has become a prison. He knows Inspector Slimane (Lucas Gridoux), for whom he has a degree of liking, is patiently waiting for the opportunity to trap him. Then one night, escaping from a botched police raid, he encounters Gaby (Mireille Balin), a slumming socialite whose bills are being paid by a wealthy older man. She, at first, is intrigued by his reputation and then is captured by his charm and confidence. Le Moko is captured, too, by her beauty, her freshness and by the overwhelming lure of freedom she represents. In the background, observing and then manipulating, is Inspector Slimane. When we first meet him, Slimane seems a limited too obsequious to his superiors and a itsy-bitsy too outclassed by le Moko. In fact, he proves smarter and more ruthless than anyone else. The ending is a heartbreaker.
Jean Gabin gives a performance of such understated power that you can’t preserve your eyes off him. What’s le Moko like, asks one character. Charming and horrid is the respond. For those, such as myself, who assume Gabin probably the finest conceal actor, the charm is there, and so is the possibility of brutality not far from the surface. Lucas Gridoux also gives a elegant performance. Inspector Slimane is a “native” cop, working under French superiors. He knows the Casbah, he can read le Moko. He’s patient and he’s positive. Slimane walks with a stoop and a smile that’s all too ready, as though he has learned what it takes to work with the French. With all that, Gridoux gives Slimane a toughness and tenacity that underlines the inevitability of le Moko’s fate.

This is a describe to study while falling in like, said Elvis Mitchell, then a film critic for the Original York Times. He’s moral. The film at times is almost jaunty and can be cynical, but it also tells a memoir that is poetic, romantic and doomed. After watching the final scene, you’ll be cheerful to have someone to hug.
The Criterion DVD looks honest stunning. There are several enthralling extras.
Many thanks to Criterion for releasing this amazing restoration of Pepe le Moko. This film was impossible to accumulate on dvd prior to this release, and Criterion has gone to mammoth lengths to do a complete presentation.
The film itself looks extraordinary. There’s collected some puny aging, etc, but most of these were retained on purpose. In addition to the film, this disc includes some expansive supplements including the history of “Pepe” and a announce comparison between Pepe le Moko and the English language remake the next year, Algiers.
I had seen Algiers many times prior to seeing Pepe. I loved Charles Boyer but if you have a chance to peek both films I mediate you will agree that Pepe le moko is by far supperior. Jean Gabin’s mask presence to an extent that Boyer doesn’t quite match. In addition, the romance in Pepe has proper sparks and chemistry. This is simply a fabulous film, and this dvd edition is proper.
Thank you Criterion.

Film Review:
Official 2006 Sundance selection, The Trials of Daryl Hunt (Ricki Stern, Annie Sundberg) is an intensely focused, highly compelling eye of racism and miscarriage of justice in North Carolina, almost twenty years in the making. It is the anecdote of young sunless man wrongly accused of the rape and cancel of a young white woman and the blatant ignorance and criminal negligence of the justice system which condemns and nearly destroys Daryl Hunt, while covering up its occupy errors and allowing the right killer to remain at great. It is bizarre to search for the proceedings, and the court constantly denying a man his freedom (19 years of jail time) in the face of wholly unreliable witnesses, a lack of a abolish weapon and even DNA evidence. The prosecution seems to desperately assume at any possible scenario which may allow that they had the just criminal all along.

Even when the man is finally released, it is with prejudice. We learn of police intimidation of precise witnesses and the viewer can only imagine that the entire system is trying to erase all label of its shoddy prosecution and put face while a man longs for freedom. As angering as the film can be, it is also tantalizing to see Hunt remain gentle, strong and hopeful, even thankful to his supporters, friends and defense lawyers with a suitable sense of justice-by the destroy of the film, which is paunchy of candid moments of his wait on team, we know that all these men have suffered along with Hunt. It is a familiar narrative of racism and a nefarious apt system; but the filmmakers, using archival as well as display day footage, crime scene photos, audio recordings, court proceedings and compassionate interviews of most everyone interested with the case (minus the arresting/interrogating officers) manage to envelope the viewer with the myth.
Disc Review:
Buy,Download, Or Stream The Trials of Darryl Hunt! Click Here
There is an apology at the beginning of the film regarding some of the sound and visual qualities of the degraded source material. This is obviously unavoidable, and the exclusion of these aspects would detract from the thoroughness and realism. To their credit, the filmmakers have transferred the source material to anamorphic wide-screen, and this certainly helps.
The sound is 5.1 stereo and the marching, ambient musical soundtrack comes of as quite haunting and evocative. It works well combined with the film.
There are a decent supply of extras, including deleted scenes and bonus interviews with those enthusiastic with the case and an especially poignant 24 diminutive HBO interview with Regina Lane, a woman who fought off the actual killer, whose profile fit strikingly with Hunt’s case, while he was incarcerated. The police silenced Lane and chose to ignore the sure lead.
Overall:
A thoroughly well-crafted documentary, racy and devastating for its entirety.
Serving 30 years imprisonment for a crime he did not commit, Darryl Hunt’s very loyal record of long overdue vindication and a justice system to fervent to status blame and not actively glimpse Truth is a enormous testament to one man’s indefatiguable spirit as well as the importance and value of DNA evidence in the exoneration of the innocent as well as conviction of the guilty. From HBO Documentary Films, it is yet another in their long line of truly exceptional misfortune to raise the bar on documentary filmmaking all the while providing quality entertainment.

I’m cheerful that George Pal’s “Conquest of Region” has been released on DVD. Of course, I am a “baby boomer” who loves science fiction movies from the 50s–in fact, I have an interest in the whole history of sci-fi/fantasy films. It’s possible that younger viewers, ancient to the fresh technological wizardry in film, will earn “Conquest” dated and unimaginative. If they give it a chance, though, there is considerable to like.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Conquest of Space! Click Here
After the spectacular “When Worlds Collide” and “War of the Worlds”, George Pal returned to the almost “semi-documentary” style of his first gargantuan feature, which heralded the 50s sci-fi whine, “Destination Moon”. Stationed above the earth in a colossal, wheel-shaped station site, a group of astronauts prepare to hover a spaceship to the moon. They are then notified of a change in plan–the moon is no longer the target–they are to undertake a worthy longer, and more unsafe pace to the planet Mars.
There are no titanic stars in this film–clearly most of the budget went on special effects. Most of the actors are quite stoic, including faces familiar to fans of vintage television–actors like Eric Fleming, William Hopper and Ross Martin. The leader of the expedition, General Merritt, is played by Walter Brooke, a no-nonsense commander who goes by the book, although he actually finds himself turning to the “ample book”. He finds strength in the Bible, although it creates doubts in his mind about Man’s good to invade original worlds. Mickey Shaughnessy over-acts outrageously as Sergeant Mahoney, a stereotypical, emotional Irish American–although his performance is actually a welcome dissimilarity to that of most of the other actors.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Conquest of Space! Click Here
One other performance of note–Benson Fong plays Imoto, the Japanese member of the crew. With objective ten short years since the demolish of the war between the United States and Japan, it is entertaining and refreshing that George Pal decided on a Japanese character in this film. The message is obvious–we should set aside our past earthly squabbles–if we are to witness the great unknown of area, we must all pull together. This is a theme that the Star Plod series was to champion later. I should add that Fong has a compelling speech about Japan’s interest, and pride, in being portion of the large adventure.
The theme of science and religion not necessarily being incompatible is raised here, perhaps not entirely successfully. It is a debate that continues to this day.
For 1955, the special effects are excellent–the plot station–the interstellar vehicles–the astronauts going for “area walks”–you cannot abet but wonder how distinguished this film influenced the Kubrick masterpiece, “2001″. Two illustrious experts were on hand to add to the film’s authenticity–Willy Ley was one of the world’s foremost pioneers in rocketry–Chesley Bonestell was a writer and artist, celebrated for his paintings of other worlds and “spacescapes”. His work enhanced “Destination Moon”, and it is a major plus here. George Pal’s frequent collaborator, Byron Haskin, directs with his usual professionalism.
The DVD is gorgeous–this is a very colourful film, and the quality here, except for the occasional strident flesh-tone, is genuine. There are no extras, except a trailer.
“Conquest of Situation” is now some fifty years obsolete, but it serene captures our sense of wonder about the future, and the exploration of our solar system and beyond. If your concept of a sci-fi movie is loads of action, and plenty of aliens to battle, this film may not be for you. On the other hand, if–as I said earlier–you have a more serious interest in the history of the sci-fi film, “Conquest of Place” deserves a residence in your DVD collection.
This DVD version of CONQUEST OF Region finally treats the movie with the respect it deserves and gets FIVE stars. The anamorphic 1:1.85 widescreen image is so mountainous, crisp, and shipshape it’s like watching the film in the theater for the first time. Three cheers for the technicians who did the transfer!
Never has the veil shown–before or since!–a better starscape than this characterize (no, not even FORBIDDEN PLANET, 2001, or STAR WARS) . The opening moments display a classic round von Braun location spot hanging and spinning in dwelling with an interplanetary vehicle parked nearby. Station has never been so dim, nor the stars so scintillating. The catch by Van Carve underscores the sense of wonder–both eerie and majestic–inherent in these scenes.
I first saw CONQUEST OF Area when I was ten. This was at a time when our local theater ran Saturday “Kiddie Mantinees” for 25 cents admission during the ’50s when the feature was almost always a science-fiction movie. That’s how I saw INVADERS FROM MARS, EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS, 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH and others for the first time. As great as I was thrilled by these movies, the one that touched me the most was CONQUEST OF Area.
Fast forward to the ’80s and ’90s. The only VHS version of the film that I’m aware of could not be more awful. The blacks are washed out due to the positively bad resolution of the tape. Even more disappointing, when the opening title sequence begins a few minutes after the open of the film, the image on the pan-and-scan VHS suddenly and unaccountably reduces in size so that the titles hurry in a foreshortened box surrounded by murky bars on all sides. As soon as “Directed By” finishes, the movie jumps help to enjoy the standard TV cloak. Since this sequence is one of the more dramatic moments in the film, this VHS version completely destroys the film makers’ intent. Snappy forward again. A couple of years ago, I discovered a Japanese Laserdisc version of the movie on E-Bay. I bought the disc hoping against hope that the Laserdisc would be an improvement over the VHS. Unfortunately it is the staunch same awful resolution pan-and scan version as the VHS. But all that is in the past now thanks to this practically perfect DVD, which has restored the title sequence to its unique widescreen glory.
Since this is a George Pal film, the special visual effects are as obliging as they could secure for their time. The legend about a lumber to Mars has many moments of spine-tingling wonder. But, due to studio interference and pressure, the script was rushed and could have been better. The depiction of the surface of Mars was dramatic and cinematically wondrous in 1954 and knocked my socks off, but has puny to do with the photographs of martian landscapes that we are familiar with today from the various NASA Mars missions.
But now I’m quibbling. This DVD is a dream reach moral and is the best rendering of this film since its unusual theatrical release in 1954. For those who wish to learn more about the production of CONQUEST OF Site and George Pal’s other safe science-fiction and fantasy films, check out the out-of-print book THE FILMS OF GEORGE PAL by Gail Morgan Hickman.

This is the last film in director Michael Cacoyannis’s Greek Tragedy trilogy after his early Sixties “Electra” (featuring Irene Pappas in the title role) and his early Seventies “The Trojan Women” (which starred Katherine Hepburn, Vanessa Redgrave, Genevieve Bujold and, once again, Irene Pappas – as Helen of Troy) .

All three movies are based on the works of Euripides – who was born approximately 484 BCE and died circa 406 BCE. Out of all the mature Greek tragedians his work has arguably the most relevance to a contemporary audience as it eloquently demonstrates the causes and nature of human suffering especially in circumstances of war or multiple execute. Despite our recent familiarity with these subjects we may not always perhaps be able to fully comprehend the nature of the painful emotional consequences alive to.
“Iphigenia” is significantly more low-budget than the visually impressive second film in the trilogy and yet it has it’s fill great emotional power. Like the first film of the three it is spoken in Greek with English subtitles.

As the film opens the Greek army is waiting at Aulis for the winds to recall up in order that they may flee to Troy. But they have been waiting many months and no such winds have arrived. The troops have become restless and are on the verge of mutiny. Agamemnon – the commander in chief – has sought advice from the Oracle at Delphi as to the best solution to this dilemma. To his shock and fear the reply returns that in order to coast to Troy and be successful in the ensuing war he must sacrifice his beloved daughter Iphigenia.
Initially Agamemnon refuses to design such a deed. He attempts to observe any plot out that he possibly can. But eventually he is persuaded by his brother Menelaus (the abduction of whose wife Helen sparked the Trojan War) that it is a tragic but famous solution to their impasse.
Agamemnon decides to lure Iphigenia to Aulis on the pretext that she is to marry Achilles. But slight does he know that Clytemnestra (played by Irene Pappas), his strong-willed wife, has decided (against his expressed instructions) to accompany her daughter to the proposed wedding.
The first half of this film is rather unimpressive. You have the feeling you are watching a fairly cheap Greek tv movie. And yet, from the point where Iphigenia (played by a marvellous swan-necked, androgenous young Greek actress) meets Agamemnon, her tortured father, the film really takes off. Clytemnestra finds out her husband’s awful diagram and attempts to recruit Achilles as her ally in order to keep her teenage daughter’s life. But the wily Odysseus, with his demagogic influence on the Greek army, stands in their intention.
The final twenty minutes of the film have as considerable emotional power as any play or movie I have ever seen. The sheer heartbreaking quandary of the characters is conveyed in a stunningly convincing manner. At the screening I attended many people were on the verge of tears during this concluding fraction. I would unreservedly recommend this film to anyone with the slightest interest in either Classical History, Greek Tragic Theatre or an emotionally fulfilling cinematic experience.
Stunning, profound, expressive. This is Michael Cacoyannis’ greatest masterpiece of three Euripidean tragedies. His first was “Electra” which was a stark drama in Sad and White shot at the real ruins of King Agamemnon’s palace at Mycenae in Southern Greece. The second was in color – “The Trojan Woman” – a disturbing portrait of men’s cruelty to the vanquished in war. The third, my personal celebrated, is this film. While it involves the sweep of historical events, it remains focused on a highly intense family drama – a heart wrenching decision between duty versus esteem.
What is the account of Iphigenia? Agamemnon assumes the honor, duty, and responsibility of leading the troops of Greece to war with Troy so as to avenge his brother’s mistreatment by a Trojan prince. Having killed a sacred deer of the goddess (Artemis), the King discovers the winds will not blow for the Greeks. That means his battle ships cannot begin. To persuade the Gods to give him the wind to victory, the King learns he must sacrifice that person most dear to him, his innocent and
virginal daughter, Iphiginia. Agamemnon’s reaction when he discovers the awful choice he must manufacture is a evil inflame. He clearly does not want to lose his flesh and blood, his innocence, but he is also realizes he is asking his troops to risk death in the upcoming war. Ultimately, and reluctantly, he chooses death for his daughter. Eventually she discovers her poor destiny…as does her mother Clytemnestra. The mother refuses to allow it, but Iphigenia sees the honor of being martyred and chooses to die…and therefore to live for Greece.
The last moment of the film is everything Greek tragedy should be. We sight the knife, Agamemnon’s stark reaction to the dread, and the wind blows at long last.
Part of the power of the film comes from the stark locations…Here we don’t glimpse sumptuous palaces in, let’s say, Richard Burton’s “Helen of Troy.” Instead, the action is filmed in the rough landscapes of Greece reflecting the tough, untamed ragged world. And the cast…the cast is glorious. Tatiana Papamoskou is aesthetic and blooming…yet she radiates something more…a steady heroism. The King, played by Kostas Kazakos, is valuable, brutal, charismatic, and surprisingly protective of his daughter. His wife, Irene Papas, plays the profoundly strong Greek woman to the core.
I cannot imagine anyone who won’t be moved by these stirring performances. Highly recommended.
