King Gustav is being plotted against by Ribbing and Horn and is advised of this by his friend Anckarstroem. Gustav is also in love with Anckarstroem’s wife, Amelia. He then proceeds to the gypsy, Ulrica, to have his fortune told, who warns him of death at the hand of a friend. Amelia goes to the gallows ground to find a magic herb to help her forget her feelings for Gustav. Gustav meets her there and professes his love. She wishes to remain faithful to her husband who arrives and is asked by Gustav to escort the lady from the grounds but not to remove her veil. Sam and Tom also arrive and in the confusion Amelia’s veil falls, Anckarstroem is infuriated when he sees his wife. To decide who will kill Gustav, the three men have Amelia draw a name, Anckarstroem’s name is drawn and when Oscar arrives to announce a Masked Ball they decide that this is when Gustav will be killed. At the Ball Amelia tells Gustav to flee, but before he can Anckarstroem kills him. Before he dies he states that Amelia has never been unfaithful and with his dying breath forgives all the conspirators. Anckarstroem is left alone with his remorse. David Zucker–of the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker creative troika behind Airplane! and television’s Police Squad!–directed this 1988 feature film based on the latter show. Leslie Nielsen returns to his old TV role of Lt. Frank Drebin, the deadpan idiot with a detective’s badge. The reinvention of the failed series as a theatrical feature seems to have inspired everyone involved to make a pretty funny movie, and the jokes gather a momentum that lasts until the final act. Ricardo Montalban is a perfect foil as a villain whose aquarium is being invaded by Drebin during routine qustioning, and George Kennedy is delightful in a self-parodying part as an earnest but obtuse lawman. There’s a hilarious bit when Drebin–wearing a live police wire while going to the bathroom–can be overheard over the loudspeakers at a speech given by a flustered mayor (Nancy Marchand). Yes, that’s O.J. Simpson as a detective who ends up on the wrong side of numerous Drebin blunders. –Tom Keogh

The ever-popular Ernest Borgnine, one of the all-time great “regular guy” stars, anchored McHale’s Navy, a cheerful, rambunctious ’60s sitcom set in the South Pacific during World War II. By its second season, the show had perfected its formula (a formula already lifted wholesale from The Phil Silvers Show): Lt. Commander McHale (Borgnine) and the scrappy crew of his PT boat (including Tim Conway, later of The Carol Burnett Show, as bumbling Ensign Parker and Gavin MacLeod, later to helm The Love Boat, as seaman “Happy” Haines) scheme, swindle, and romance their way through the war, avoiding the enemy whenever possible, and making life miserable for their petty, tyrannical commanding officer, Capt. Binghamton (Joe Flynn, later to appear in numerous Disney live-action movies like The Love Bug and The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes). Though some episodes reflected real world issus of the 1960s (for example, Ensign Parker feels less of a man when a pretty nurse turns out to be better than him at pretty much everything), by and large the show existed in a bubble of slapstick and classic vaudeville schtick–and the show’s fans wouldn’t want it any other way. Despite the backdrop of WWII, McHale’s Navy aimed young. McHale and his crew are basically a gang of rascally kids getting away with pranks and defying the adult authority figures around them. Though the guys routinely pursu nurses, their “dates” amount to little more than stolen kisses and light petting–compared to the leering Hogan’s Heroes, McHale’s Navy is strangely prepubescent. Of course, this innocence is much of the show’s charm, and makes the occasional Asian and Pacific Islander stereotypes a little easier to take (though it’s worth noting that the Japanese characters on the show were always played by Japanese actors, something not common at the time). In addition to the original 36 episodes aired in 1963-64, McHale’s Navy: Season Two features brief interviews with Borgnine and Conway (regrettably, Flynn died in 1974). The fairly bland Borgnine interview has at least one good anecdote, but the Conway interview is charming throughout. –Bret Fetzer

Comparisons to The Blair Witch Project are inevitable for the inventive, satirical The Last Broadcast, a chilling and funny mockumentary by filmmakers Stefan Avalos and Lance Weiler. Besides being made and coming to prominence around the same time (though without a Blair Witch-style marketing juggernaut), The Last Broadcast also details the doomed travails of some amateur filmmakers as they track a mysterious, murderous legend in a dark forest. Hmmm, sound familiar? Actually, The Last Broadcast takes a different tack on this premise, one more media-savvy than Blair Witch. Turns out that this is the latest installment of the X-Files-ish public access show Fact or Fiction, and its doofusy hosts (Avalos and Weiler themselves) plan on doing a live broadcast from deep in the New Jersey woods on their ongoing qust for the Bigfoot-like Jersey Devil. Teaming up with two Internet-based fans, they plunge themselves and their equipment into the wintry woods; only one man, the creepy psychic Jim (Jim Seward), returns, and is promptly convicted of the murders of the other three. While it does boast footage made by the “dead” filmmakers, The Last Broadcast is more formally structured as a documentary, complete with officious, muckraking host (David Leigh) and much behind-the-scenes footage. We’re let in on the backgrounds of the victims, the 911 phone calls, the murder trial, the inconsistencies the prosecution overlooked, and the painstaking work of reconstructing the film stock, which may unlock the mystery of the tru killer. Filmed entirely with digital cameras and assembled on digital systems for a mind-boggling $900, The Last Broadcast boasts a great look and a sharp, satiric eye for sending up the media–Avalos and Weiler are in calm command of their medium and message. The film does take a sharp turn that could either enrage or amaze viewers enraptured by what’s preceded, but it’s a minor quibble at best. And unlike The Blair Witch Project, The Last Broadcast does answer all the mysterious qustions it raises. –Mark Englehart
