Pepe le Moko (Jean Gabin) fled France for Algiers after a robbery, and has been holed up in the Casbah for two years. He’s a major crime figure and the police, as long as he stays in the Casbah’s labyrinth of streets, stairways and alleys, protected and warned by the people who live there, can’t touch him. But le Moko is tired of his fate. He longs for France and freedom. He’s bored with his life and with his mistress (Line Noro) . The Casbah has become a prison. He knows Inspector Slimane (Lucas Gridoux), for whom he has a degree of liking, is patiently waiting for the opportunity to trap him. Then one night, escaping from a botched police raid, he encounters Gaby (Mireille Balin), a slumming socialite whose bills are being paid by a wealthy older man. She, at first, is intrigued by his reputation and then is captured by his charm and confidence. Le Moko is captured, too, by her beauty, her freshness and by the overwhelming lure of freedom she represents. In the background, observing and then manipulating, is Inspector Slimane. When we first meet him, Slimane seems a limited too obsequious to his superiors and a itsy-bitsy too outclassed by le Moko. In fact, he proves smarter and more ruthless than anyone else. The ending is a heartbreaker.

Jean Gabin gives a performance of such understated power that you can’t preserve your eyes off him. What’s le Moko like, asks one character. Charming and horrid is the respond. For those, such as myself, who assume Gabin probably the finest conceal actor, the charm is there, and so is the possibility of brutality not far from the surface. Lucas Gridoux also gives a elegant performance. Inspector Slimane is a “native” cop, working under French superiors. He knows the Casbah, he can read le Moko. He’s patient and he’s positive. Slimane walks with a stoop and a smile that’s all too ready, as though he has learned what it takes to work with the French. With all that, Gridoux gives Slimane a toughness and tenacity that underlines the inevitability of le Moko’s fate.

Many thanks to Criterion for releasing this amazing restoration of Pepe le Moko. This film was impossible to accumulate on dvd prior to this release, and Criterion has gone to mammoth lengths to do a complete presentation.
The film itself looks extraordinary. There’s collected some puny aging, etc, but most of these were retained on purpose. In addition to the film, this disc includes some expansive supplements including the history of “Pepe” and a announce comparison between Pepe le Moko and the English language remake the next year, Algiers.
I had seen Algiers many times prior to seeing Pepe. I loved Charles Boyer but if you have a chance to peek both films I mediate you will agree that Pepe le moko is by far supperior. Jean Gabin’s mask presence to an extent that Boyer doesn’t quite match. In addition, the romance in Pepe has proper sparks and chemistry. This is simply a fabulous film, and this dvd edition is proper.

Official 2006 Sundance selection, The Trials of Daryl Hunt (Ricki Stern, Annie Sundberg) is an intensely focused, highly compelling eye of racism and miscarriage of justice in North Carolina, almost twenty years in the making. It is the anecdote of young sunless man wrongly accused of the rape and cancel of a young white woman and the blatant ignorance and criminal negligence of the justice system which condemns and nearly destroys Daryl Hunt, while covering up its occupy errors and allowing the right killer to remain at great. It is bizarre to search for the proceedings, and the court constantly denying a man his freedom (19 years of jail time) in the face of wholly unreliable witnesses, a lack of a abolish weapon and even DNA evidence. The prosecution seems to desperately assume at any possible scenario which may allow that they had the just criminal all along.

Even when the man is finally released, it is with prejudice. There is an apology at the beginning of the film regarding some of the sound and visual qualities of the degraded source material. This is obviously unavoidable, and the exclusion of these aspects would detract from the thoroughness and realism. To their credit, the filmmakers have transferred the source material to anamorphic wide-screen, and this certainly helps.

The sound is 5.1 stereo and the marching, ambient musical soundtrack comes of as quite haunting and evocative. It works well combined with the film.

There are a decent supply of extras, including deleted scenes and bonus interviews with those enthusiastic with the case and an especially poignant 24 diminutive HBO interview with Regina Lane, a woman who fought off the actual killer, whose profile fit strikingly with Hunt’s case, while he was incarcerated. The police silenced Lane and chose to ignore the sure lead.

Overall:

A thoroughly well-crafted documentary, racy and devastating for its entirety.

I’m cheerful that George Pal’s “Conquest of Region” has been released on DVD. Of course, I am a “baby boomer” who loves science fiction movies from the 50s–in fact, I have an interest in the whole history of sci-fi/fantasy films. It’s possible that younger viewers, ancient to the fresh technological wizardry in film, will earn “Conquest” dated and unimaginative. If they give it a chance, though, there is considerable to like.

After the spectacular “When Worlds Collide” and “War of the Worlds”, George Pal returned to the almost “semi-documentary” style of his first gargantuan feature, which heralded the 50s sci-fi whine, “Destination Moon”. Stationed above the earth in a colossal, wheel-shaped station site, a group of astronauts prepare to hover a spaceship to the moon. They are then notified of a change in plan–the moon is no longer the target–they are to undertake a worthy longer, and more unsafe pace to the planet Mars.

There are no titanic stars in this film–clearly most of the budget went on special effects. Most of the actors are quite stoic, including faces familiar to fans of vintage television–actors like Eric Fleming, William Hopper and Ross Martin. The leader of the expedition, General Merritt, is played by Walter Brooke, a no-nonsense commander who goes by the book, although he actually finds himself turning to the “ample book”. He finds strength in the Bible, although it creates doubts in his mind about Man’s good to invade original worlds. Mickey Shaughnessy over-acts outrageously as Sergeant Mahoney, a stereotypical, emotional Irish American–although his performance is actually a welcome dissimilarity to that of most of the other actors.

One other performance of note–Benson Fong plays Imoto, the Japanese member of the crew. With objective ten short years since the demolish of the war between the United States and Japan, it is entertaining and refreshing that George Pal decided on a Japanese character in this film. The message is obvious–we should set aside our past earthly squabbles–if we are to witness the great unknown of area, we must all pull together. This is a theme that the Star Plod series was to champion later. I should add that Fong has a compelling speech about Japan’s interest, and pride, in being portion of the large adventure.

The theme of science and religion not necessarily being incompatible is raised here, perhaps not entirely successfully. It is a debate that continues to this day.

For 1955, the special effects are excellent–the plot station–the interstellar vehicles–the astronauts going for “area walks”–you cannot abet but wonder how distinguished this film influenced the Kubrick masterpiece, “2001″. Two illustrious experts were on hand to add to the film’s authenticity–Willy Ley was one of the world’s foremost pioneers in rocketry–Chesley Bonestell was a writer and artist, celebrated for his paintings of other worlds and “spacescapes”. His work enhanced “Destination Moon”, and it is a major plus here. George Pal’s frequent collaborator, Byron Haskin, directs with his usual professionalism.

The DVD is gorgeous–this is a very colourful film, and the quality here, except for the occasional strident flesh-tone, is genuine. There are no extras, except a trailer.

“Conquest of Situation” is now some fifty years obsolete, but it serene captures our sense of wonder about the future, and the exploration of our solar system and beyond. If your concept of a sci-fi movie is loads of action, and plenty of aliens to battle, this film may not be for you. On the other hand, if–as I said earlier–you have a more serious interest in the history of the sci-fi film, “Conquest of Place” deserves a residence in your DVD collection.

This DVD version of CONQUEST OF Region finally treats the movie with the respect it deserves and gets FIVE stars. The anamorphic 1:1.85 widescreen image is so mountainous, crisp, and shipshape it’s like watching the film in the theater for the first time. Three cheers for the technicians who did the transfer!

Never has the veil shown–before or since!–a better starscape than this characterize (no, not even FORBIDDEN PLANET, 2001, or STAR WARS) . The opening moments display a classic round von Braun location spot hanging and spinning in dwelling with an interplanetary vehicle parked nearby. Station has never been so dim, nor the stars so scintillating. The catch by Van Carve underscores the sense of wonder–both eerie and majestic–inherent in these scenes.

I first saw CONQUEST OF Area when I was ten. This was at a time when our local theater ran Saturday “Kiddie Mantinees” for 25 cents admission during the ’50s when the feature was almost always a science-fiction movie. That’s how I saw INVADERS FROM MARS, EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS, 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH and others for the first time. As great as I was thrilled by these movies, the one that touched me the most was CONQUEST OF Area.

Fast forward to the ’80s and ’90s. The only VHS version of the film that I’m aware of could not be more awful. The blacks are washed out due to the positively bad resolution of the tape. Even more disappointing, when the opening title sequence begins a few minutes after the open of the film, the image on the pan-and-scan VHS suddenly and unaccountably reduces in size so that the titles hurry in a foreshortened box surrounded by murky bars on all sides. As soon as “Directed By” finishes, the movie jumps help to enjoy the standard TV cloak. Since this sequence is one of the more dramatic moments in the film, this VHS version completely destroys the film makers’ intent. Snappy forward again. A couple of years ago, I discovered a Japanese Laserdisc version of the movie on E-Bay. I bought the disc hoping against hope that the Laserdisc would be an improvement over the VHS. Unfortunately it is the staunch same awful resolution pan-and scan version as the VHS. But all that is in the past now thanks to this practically perfect DVD, which has restored the title sequence to its unique widescreen glory.

Since this is a George Pal film, the special visual effects are as obliging as they could secure for their time. The legend about a lumber to Mars has many moments of spine-tingling wonder. But, due to studio interference and pressure, the script was rushed and could have been better. The depiction of the surface of Mars was dramatic and cinematically wondrous in 1954 and knocked my socks off, but has puny to do with the photographs of martian landscapes that we are familiar with today from the various NASA Mars missions.

But now I’m quibbling. This DVD is a dream reach moral and is the best rendering of this film since its unusual theatrical release in 1954. Initially Agamemnon refuses to design such a deed. He attempts to observe any plot out that he possibly can. But eventually he is persuaded by his brother Menelaus (the abduction of whose wife Helen sparked the Trojan War) that it is a tragic but famous solution to their impasse.

Agamemnon decides to lure Iphigenia to Aulis on the pretext that she is to marry Achilles. But slight does he know that Clytemnestra (played by Irene Pappas), his strong-willed wife, has decided (against his expressed instructions) to accompany her daughter to the proposed wedding.

The first half of this film is rather unimpressive. You have the feeling you are watching a fairly cheap Greek tv movie. And yet, from the point where Iphigenia (played by a marvellous swan-necked, androgenous young Greek actress) meets Agamemnon, her tortured father, the film really takes off. Clytemnestra finds out her husband’s awful diagram and attempts to recruit Achilles as her ally in order to keep her teenage daughter’s life. But the wily Odysseus, with his demagogic influence on the Greek army, stands in their intention.

The final twenty minutes of the film have as considerable emotional power as any play or movie I have ever seen. The sheer heartbreaking quandary of the characters is conveyed in a stunningly convincing manner. At the screening I attended many people were on the verge of tears during this concluding fraction. I would unreservedly recommend this film to anyone with the slightest interest in either Classical History, Greek Tragic Theatre or an emotionally fulfilling cinematic experience.

Stunning, profound, expressive. This is Michael Cacoyannis’ greatest masterpiece of three Euripidean tragedies. His first was “Electra” which was a stark drama in Sad and White shot at the real ruins of King Agamemnon’s palace at Mycenae in Southern Greece. The second was in color - “The Trojan Woman” - a disturbing portrait of men’s cruelty to the vanquished in war. The third, my personal celebrated, is this film. While it involves the sweep of historical events, it remains focused on a highly intense family drama - a heart wrenching decision between duty versus esteem.

What is the account of Iphigenia? Agamemnon assumes the honor,duty, and responsibility of leading the troops of Greece to war with Troy so as to avenge his brother’s mistreatment by a Trojan prince. Having killed a sacred deer of the goddess (Artemis), the King discovers the winds will not blow for the Greeks. That means his battle ships cannot begin. To persuade the Gods to give him the wind to victory, the King learns he must sacrifice that person most dear to him, his innocent and

virginal daughter, Iphiginia. Agamemnon’s reaction when he discovers the awful choice he must manufacture is a evil inflame. He clearly does not want to lose his flesh and blood, his innocence, but he is also realizes he is asking his troops to risk death in the upcoming war. Ultimately, and reluctantly, he chooses death for his daughter. Eventually she discovers her poor destiny…as does her mother Clytemnestra. The mother refuses to allow it, but Iphigenia sees the honor of being martyred and chooses to die…and therefore to live for Greece.

The last moment of the film is everything Greek tragedy should be. We sight the knife, Agamemnon’s stark reaction to the dread, and the wind blows at long last.

Part of the power of the film comes from the stark locations…Here we don’t glimpse sumptuous palaces in, let’s say, Richard Burton’s “Helen of Troy.” Instead, the action is filmed in the rough landscapes of Greece reflecting the tough, untamed ragged world. And the cast…the cast is glorious. Tatiana Papamoskou is aesthetic and blooming…yet she radiates something more…a steady heroism. The King, played by Kostas Kazakos, is valuable, brutal, charismatic, and surprisingly protective of his daughter. His wife, Irene Papas, plays the profoundly strong Greek woman to the core.

I cannot imagine anyone who won’t be moved by these stirring performances. Highly recommended.

After reading the gushing, swooning review from the DVD critic in last Tuesday’s NY Times, I immediately ordered the “Special Collector’s Edition” of TO Win A THIEF from Amazon. When it arrived, I compared it to my unique Paramount “Widescreen Edition” from 2002. Well, the critic was right–there’s simply no comparison. This unusual version has a 2.0 Dolby Surround soundtrack (in addition to the novel mono version) and a cleaned-up, enhanced, crystal-clear portray, inaugurate to do. It looks like they took the drab, blurry, obsolete former stock and actually washed it, removing years of dirt and grime and smoke and hair and whatever else was there, not to mention a computerized removal of virtually all scratches and glitches. The result is fabulous.

As for the color, peep for yourself. Pay end attention to the first car glide down the mountain, the meeting in the flower market, and the costume ball come the kill. Not to mention the many night scenes on rooftops, where everything is now remarkable more visible than before. And Grant and Kelly? Well, the two most ravishing people who ever lived behold even more comely. Wait till you perceive the eminent fireworks scene now!

I don’t have to snort you that this film is improbable, no matter which version you have. But I can guarantee you that this newly restored version makes it seem better than ever. If you’re as nuts about Hitchcock as I am, it really is worth the upgrade. Appreciate!

What an extraordinary film. Director Jonathan Levine’s attention to detail in making positive that every aspect of the film looks and feels like the 90’s really adds to the feel of the film. All of the actors work really well especially Sir Ben Kingsley and Josh Peck, who has a breakout performance in this film, showing that he’s got a future in this business. With amusing dialogue, nicely shot cinematography, and backed by an astonishing soundtrack, The Wackness is definitely a film to search for this summer if you loved the 90’s.

The year is 1994, A high school teenager in Recent York who doesn’t have any friends but spends his time selling marijuana using his disguise as a person who sells ice in the park, while saving up all his money.

But all is not frigid in the life of Luke, his parents are having some financial problems and in worry of being evicted, his mind is on getting laid and losing his virginity and the only person he can communicate his emotions to is one of his clients, Dr. Jeffrey Squires (Ben Kingsley) . He wants some anti-depressants but Squires tells him to embrace his hurt and more or less, he needs to collect a girlfriend and gather laid.

Dr. Squires is not exactly a role model for Josh. He’s a product of the 60’s, loves doing cocaine and marijuana and somehow, is able to connect with Luke and provides him professional advice for drugs. But like Luke, his life is not at all going that stout. His relationship with his wife Kristin is not at all going so broad and all they have is their memories of sex and doing drugs. Meanwhile, he notices that his step-daughter Stephanie (Olivia Thirlby, “Juno”) is getting closer to Luke. But realizes that it’s not esteem that she has for Luke, it’s unbiased a sexual hurry.

Luke doesn’t have considerable experience with people, appreciate and thus he discovers himself while hanging out with Stephanie. Dr. Squires as a father doesn’t want his stepdaughter to be around a drug dealer but at the same time, as his psychiatrist, he doesn’t feel that Stephanie is wonderful for Luke. Both men are obviously heartbroken but somehow, they regain comfort in talking with each other and thus Luke and Dr. Squires manufacture a friendship that would interestingly introduce Dr. Squires to Luke’s world and for Luke, getting the needed therapy from his shrink. So, the epic fine considerable focuses on a young man (Luke) who is guided by an older man (Dr. Squires) but then the tale starts to shift of the younger guy guiding an older man.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

The film is featured in anamorphic widescreen ala 2:35:1 ratio. The film is shot in different parts of Tokyo but oviously scenes such as the Twin Towers had to be set into the film. When you do a period share, especially if it’s 1994, with a busy city like Current York, unless you have a large budget, you got originate do what with what you have. And thus a lot of the scenes are shot indoors but you do have some outdoor scenes with Luke and Stephanie at the beach or areas where Luke is dealing drugs.

As for audio, you catch a English and French 5.1 Dolby Digital track and the film is primarily a dialogue driven film. * Commentary with Director Jonathan Levine and Actor Josh Peck - A very casual and cold commentary and you learn indispensable tidbits about the film. From Ben Kingsley giving advice to Josh, having to work with Mary-Kate in the amount of hours they had to work with her and how hard it was for Josh Peck to do his lovemaking scene with Olivia Thirlby. Levine and Peck have frosty and fun commentary talking about blunts, the music, it’s typically a commentary that is like hanging out with friends. Especially at the slay when they talk about hanging out after the commentary and playing XBOX 360, you don’t hear that on director’s commentary, so it’s all proper.

* Keeping it Real: A Day in the Life of Writer/Director Jonathan Levine - For this eight shrimp feature, Jonathan Levine is traveling around the country and London to promote “The Wackness” at film festivals and interviews at radio stations. Jonathan is joined by the cast and his girlfriend, production designer Annie Spitz and his brother and his girlfriend.

* Time in a Bottle: Leisurely the Scenes of The Wackness - An 18-minute featurette featuring behind-the-scenes on the making of the film. Levine explains that the film is not 100% autobiographical and a screenplay that was based on an concept he had during filmschool. I have to say that “The Wackness” is a magnificent frigid coming-of-age film and yes, there have been many of these type of movies but a definitely, current film. Having the film spot in 1994, having the main character as a drug dealer, having his psychiatrist as one of his clients and also a hardcore drug user and unprejudiced how everything fair comes together is quite delightful.

But the performances by Ben Kingsley and Josh Peck was well done. Two roles by talents that I would never watch coming. Ben Kingsley in so many serious roles in “Ghandi”, “Schindler’s List”, “Rules of Engagement” to name a few and then Josh Peck who stars in the Nickelodeon teen indicate “Drake & Josh”, these two taking on roles so different and to spy them drinking alcohol and doing/dealing drugs, definitely it’s quite a bit of a surprise. But the new thing is that these two talents had mountainous chemistry and everything worked out quite well.

And there are also a capable number of talent in this film. Olivia Thirlby did a tall job as Squire’s daughter Stephanie and Luke’s esteem interest. Did a titanic job playing a sexual teen and then you have Mary-Kate Olsen as a pothead who fair makes out with Ben Kingsley. Famke Janssen as Dr. Squires sexy wife, Plan Man playing the character “Percy” as Luke’s supplier and mighty more.

There are unprejudiced these tiny moments in the film, from mannerisms to the diminutive things that a character does, it really makes this film seem quite realistic and earn it all work. Of course, the early 90’s nostalgia and the music plays a large fragment in the film. When Luke and Olivia are making treasure, R. Kelly playing on the pronounce box to Luke playing Zelda on his NES, these minute things are what many people who grew up at the time and listened to the music can related to. So, definitely a nice touch!

And the DVD, objective makes you appreciate the film even more with cold commentary, the featurettes and more. It’s not all business-like and professional. You have Levine and Peck quite casual and as I mentioned in the commentary allotment, it’s like hanging out with a few friends and fair everyone having a valid time.

Now granted, perhaps I may be a bit biased having grown up with the pop culture of the 90’s and hearing the songs and the style from those years boosting my appreciation for the film but for an indie film, I have to admit that the overall presentation was quite non-traditional. Again, there are a bunch of “coming-of-age” films out there but this one was really thinking outside of the box and instead of getting a “revenge of the nerd” happy-feel agreeable storyline, each of these characters have flaws but it’s all about discovering one’s self.

All in all, a solid DVD with a lot of humor, a lot of soul and all out fun!

VIZ/ShoPro does a immense job bringing the series to DVD. The product is excellent; menu screens are beautifully executed with and easy to navigate. The anime itself is crisp, sparkling and the sound definite. You’ll also like the bonus line art and bi-lingual cast lists which correspond to each released episode.

The NA issue cast is nearly as well-matched to their characters as the unique Japanese cast. But, if you don’t like dubs, the subtitles are very well done. No muddled “Engrish”, and very discontinuance to recent manga dialog so far! (Listening, Taiwan? )

It’s fairly well known that the Movies never really fit in the Dragon Ball Z universe. Granted one or two of them did so (Bardock, History of Trunks, Lifeless Zone) most of them were more of an “Elseworlds” anecdote. Wrath of the Dragon fits in the tradtion of the “Elseworlds” tales, but also in a petite method can fit into the DBZ universe itself.

Wrath of the Dragon is about a sorceror who tricks the Z fighters to release a legendary hero Tapion using the Dragon Balls. The quandary with this is that Tapion has half of an rank demon Hirudegarn. As Tapion struggles with the demon, the other half of it starts creating chaos on earth. Eventually the Z fighters learn the truth and attempt to demolish the beast.

This is one of the best Z movies, and is also one of the longest. The inner struggle with Tapion is realy well done, and the friendship he gains with Trunks is memorable. This epic is also quite a bit of a Trunks epic as a few revelations are also revealed during this record. Overall this is one of the best Z movies, and is a gigantic send off to a legendary series

One of a handful of stories written by Toei Animation suitable of the Toriyama new account. The film moves rapid, the action is fun an intense, the characters are in beefy development (even the recent addtions) and Dragon Fist! is unbiased a kickass looking attack. One intelligent point of the anecdote is how it moves from one character to the next, being passed along, so it isn’t focusing on a singular character. Something the other movies didn’t really do. Because of this, it feels more like an American though-provoking film (except in art style, naturally) and this brings my single complaint; It isn’t long enough. The chronicle could’ve been even better if played around with me. But I mumble Japanese children and teens don’t have high enough attention spans…?

I had the privilege of seeing this production performed live in LA. It was an extraordinary experience slightly marred by the fact that the concert hall was clearly a larger place than these actors were primitive to filling with their voices, and for those of us stuck under the balcony, it was not always possible to hear everything over the ambient noises around us. So I was thrilled when I heard that they were taking the production into the studio to trap it for posterity, and I immediately bought the (plot free) Blu-Ray edition from the UK.

I don’t regret the capture, but I was somewhat disappointed. Outdoor scenes are all filmed against a blue camouflage that poorly simulates sky, giving all the outdoor scenes a obvious cheese factor. On a stage we suspend our disbelief - the lighting changes and we occupy we are now out of doors, but on a camouflage we ask a shrimp more realism.

Likewise, I found the sets of the stage performance more effective as well. They had a grandeur - and later in the play, a decay - that was really missing from the sets dilapidated in the studio. I understand that the studio was aiming for more realism, so you wouldn’t have the same backdrop for a whole act when the scenes shift and so on. But they didn’t manage to replace the missing dwelling with anything more effective dramatically.

Furthermore, the cinematography was very heavy handed in terms of constantly flashing from one actor’s face to another to obtain distinct no reaction is missed. It was at times very jarring. On a stage, one of the intelligent dynamics is that each audience member can resolve where to focus attention, and so each person walks away with a different experience. Here in an attempt to seize the richness of each scene, the camera tried to point to everything, and the result wasn’t gracious. O.K. The camera didn’t point to EVERYTHING. The imperfect scene were Lear strips down is trimmed by the frame of the camera for modesty. So if such things as male nudity bother you, this is a production you can search for with your kids.

But if you net over the cheese factor of the camera work and sets, this is detached Trevor Nunn, Ian McKellan and the Royal Shakespeare Company doing their thing. You’ll hear Shakespeare’s words interpreted and performed with ample skill.

This is a noble but ultimately disappointing production of Shakespeare’s greatest play. How can it be both? It is fine for several reasons. Ian McKellen is one of the substantial Shakespearean actors of his generation, and he here delivers a masterful Lear, inspiring and credible and utterly faithful to the character in the text; if there are a few too many of the familiar McKellen mannerisms, who’s to complain–they work as well here as elsewhere. The rest of the acting is at a very high level indeed; there is not a single performance I would fault, and I couldn’t say that of any other video “Lear”. The dialog has been intelligently edited, and clearly and audibly recorded; for once in a production of Lear there are no “What did he impartial say? ” moments, not even with the Fool’s dialog. Logic and clarity are equally evidenced in Trevor Nunn’s direction. A puny example: in this production, the disappearance of the Fool midway through the play is explained dramatically, as we survey his hanging by forces pursuing Lear, something not in the stage directions and only vaguely supported by the text. It’s dramatically satisfying; we need not ask “What happened to him? ” Another example: the poisoning of Regan by Goneril occurs on stage, and is thereby made genuinely horrifying instead of being a bit of off-stage melodrama. The initial displeasing of Lear by Cordelia and his instant, irrevocable rage, which are hard to manufacture credible in performance because of the compressed stage-time, are easier to beget in here; they arrive off as (perhaps) some good-natured teasing gone horribly awry (though I’m not positive that’s what was intended, and if so that it is faithful to the text) . So why is the production nevertheless disappointing? When a substantial actor takes on a gigantic character of Shakespeare, we want to approach away with something recent and great–some original plan, some original emotion, some unique experience of the play which will change forever our relationship to the text. Here, alas, there is nothing fresh. No modern sense of Lear as an individual, as in the Olivier video, or of his relation to his daughters, as in Ian Holm’s version. Unprejudiced a very straightforward, highly competent rendition. Obliging, but disappointing.
